Long term 3Delight availability in DAZ

Hi folks. I'm planning a multi-year project and notice that DAZ is in constant development and recently also changed business models to become totally free. While I'm sometimes frustrated that the documentation always seems to be outdated--I like that the software is getting better and better. I do have two nagging fears though:

(1) 3Delight might be dropped from DAZ at some point

(2) DAZ will change business models and become too expensive for me to use

My alternative plan is to export everything to Blender for rendering since I'm confident it will always be available and free. However, I'm finding converting materials to be frustrating and time consuming.

Can anyone do anything to put my fears to rest?

    1) Daz renewed their 3delight license about the tiem Iray was announced, and gave no indication that they intended to drop support.

    2) even if that happened (and it seems unlikely to me) you'd still have DS 4.whatever, of DS 5, or wherever it had got to, to use.

I can't see them dropping it anytime, for quite a while methinks. 3DL has so much to offer digital artists by being flexible.

OK. So far the comments have been reassuring.

In other threads that have come up on this, the concensus is that if D|S no longer came with 3DL Daz wouldn't be able to sell a great deal of its legacy content, or at least have trouble justifying selling it. While new products tend to favor Iray, the store is still 3DL majority. Will be that way for some time to come.

  • dvyd, DAZ makes its money mainly from content. They tried selling the full Studio in the store for a while, but it has been free for several years now since then. The free software brings users in and they get hooked on the content. I don't see it going away or changing to cost money anytime soon. When they were charging for it, it was not expensive. With Blender around, I seriously doubt they'll ever charge for it again.

Tobor & Kevin, thank you for this reassurance. Your reasoning seems solid to me.

  • I have seen several users mention that they still have DS3 installed along side the latest and use it to render things very frequently so I'm sure you will be able to do the same with what ever version you end up using.

I realize this is an old thread, but I want to throw my thoughts in anyway.

I think it's highly unlikely that Daz will drop 3Delight support. Iray is great for what it does, which is producing photorealistic renders with physically accurate lighting. But not everyone wants that. Physically accurate lighting can make it very hard to control how light behaves in your scene. Depending on art style, not everyone wants photorealism.

So yeah, I think there will always be a need for 3Delight and other biased rendering engines. Again, not everyone wants physically accurate lighting. Depending on your art style, physically accurate lighting can be very hard to work with.
