Setting up a night time scene

DDCreateDDCreate Posts: 1,416

I have a few environments that I think would look great as night scenes but I can't figure out how to do them. I select a good night time back ground but the lighting still looks like daylight. Obviously a background isn't going to have much to do with lighting. I guess I was just throwing that out there. Anyway, I know there are such things as Iray Domes or Draw Domes and various things like that and either they emit light or block light. I just am lost on how to set them in my scene so that I can start toying with trying to make decent moon light. I'm sure this is something a lot of people know how to do so hopefully someone can shoot me some quick pointers and get me over the hump.

Thanks for any help/advice!

One option, especially for a clear night, would be to set the Environment mode to Scene only (in the Editor tab of Render Settings) and use a distant light for the moon.

SCENE ONLY! Thank you! I knew it was somewhere in those settings. Thanks Richard.

Some inspiration might be found in the Wikipedia article on how film studios shoot nighttime scenes:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_for_night

Thank you both for the tips! It's much better than it was now. Unfortunately there was a small accident. No one got hurt I just wanted to post it as a reminder. Daz safe and wear a helmet!

One trick to make it look more like nighttime, too, is to use a blue color to your lighting.  It doesn't always work but it does the majority of the time.

I had that thought too. I played with it a little bit and it was too blue. I just kept adjusting down. You can see some color variance on the back wall but oddly enough it looks sort of pink/purple. Oh well. As in all things, it's a work in progress.
