What's the liklihood of getting this to work? (technical questions about hair)

There's a hair for genesis 3 male that would look PERFECT for one of the characters I have for Genesis 2 male..IN POSER.

!!! I only use Poser !!!!

I have DAZ but it's merely to convert stuff to Poser.

I have low hopes for this but I was wondering if it is at all possible to create a poser companion file to get it to work in Poser and to SOMEHOW put it on my genesis 2 male without it exploding.

I know a lot of times that the textures are incorrect so I would probably have to do everything manually with it if it did work but I may or may not be willing to do it.

Note again, POSER. Because for some reason every time I post on here if I don't say it 50 times someone recommends me something DAZ only. No offense to the people here, I just feel like I need to state it a good few times and having to correct people so much gets a little tedious.

The version is !!!!!!!! POSER PRO 2014 !!!!!!!!

Maybe try loading the hair.duf file with D3D's DSON loader script and see if the hair can be parented to G2M in poser?

    http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=poserpython&product=dson_loader

Most likely you will have to apply the materials manually, but at least you can see if the hair will 'work' in Poser...

Does the hair have morphs you need to transfer over?  If not, maybe you can just export it as an OBJ and then import it into Poser and possition it manually?

Also, while it requires a little more work in DS, it may be possible to autofit it to G2M in DS, then save the autofit hair as a .duf and then use *that* .duf to bring it into Poser through DSON.

I can walk you through it if you like.

Sorry.  I forgot, I don't think you can go backwards with the default templates.  (I bought the templates to go backwards, so I sometimes forget what does and doesn't come with DS default content.)

the hair does, indeed, have morphs I need to transfer over

Ok, I'm using P11Pro, but the principle should be the same...

Did a test with the Fraser hair for G3M

    1) load the hair in DS

    2) change the weightsystem(?) to triAx --  from the menu -- edit /  figure / Rigging / Convert general weight to TriAx

    3) save the hair as a scene-subset (different name)

(Creating PCF files gave an error on my system)

You can then load this 'new' hair in Poser with D3D's script as mentioned in my earlier post, and in my try-out, the morphs work. (Of course, the materials need to be adjusted manually as most likely only the diffuse texture maps wil be applied...)

As is with most hairs that are used on a different figure then it is designed for, it is best to parent the hair to the head rather then conforming it....

    (edited for some typos...)

Is there a tutorial anywhere that shows how to adjust the textures?

I mean I know how to load image maps but the values of them are lost on me..

and sometimes there's just a lot of crap in image maps I don't understand.

Would it, perhaps, be possible to copy and paste the nodes from another hair and then switch out their image maps for the right one?

If there is such a tutorial, I am not aware of it.

Using an other hair as example/template could be a good way to start. The most important nodes (IMO) are diffuse, transparency (opacity), specular and bump/displacement. Which nodes are used differ per hair. An other important thing to remenber, when using node values from DS in Poser, is that DS uses cm. as units, wereas in poser that depends on what you've set it to (I think the default is inches, but I have mine set to cm. as that is what I am used to....)

Being already waaaay past midnight here, not the right time for me to get deep into this right now........

If it's iRay hair what many people do is Ctrl-Click on the preset shader of the hair while having the appropriate hair surface selected on the target model hair that they like the shader settings for...and that causes the Surfaces shaders are updated for that current hair while leaving the actual diffuse and other maps alone.

Doesn't give the results you expect all the time but it is often an improvement for old hair designed for 3DL.

A nice trick indeed, alas not usable in Poser (and that's what this is all about) smiley

    Oh, sorry.

In that case use Poser Firefly and what a couple of tuturials on that. Poser is much better documented and as a bonus since Firefly is based off of Blender Cycles tutorials on doing hair in Blender Cycles would be very informative.

I'd go for creating brand new hair in Blender & exporting to Poser.

Ok, call me confused, but.... Isn't 'Superfly' based off blender cycles?

If you do know some tutorials for Firefly and hair settings, please do post (links to) them. I think the OP would be grateful, and I sure wouldn't mind either (never to old to learn...).
