Hair "shrinks" while loading

Hi all!

I have recently started to try out Genesis 3 and have run into a couple of problems. One is fairly new to me. When I select the Genesis 3 figure and loads a hair on it the hair shrinks. First it looks okay but then it changes form and becomes smaller than the scalp. When the product has an Adjust Head it is not a problem but when it doesn't it just looks bad. I hope you understand what I mean and that someone knows what to do. I'll try to attach an example of what I mean.

Thanks for reading.

Is the hair made for the Genesis 3 figure?

  • Yes, it is. I believe the product in the render is called Krayon and I have had similar results with Lil Devil Tails, Bobbity Bob and a few others that I have tried. (That is why I'm guessing that I am doing something wrong.) It looks fine when it loads and then it "shrinks" when it conforms or whatever it is called.

Is the figure in its zero shape, at least for the ehad? If you select the hair and look at the Parameters pane is there a Mesh SMoothing group - if so does turning smoothing off help?

  • I'll try that later tonight. I think I tried it but I'm not certain. I'll post when I know for sure.

  • No, it gets worse if I turn off smoothing. The Genesis 3 female figure is not in its zero shape and if I load a brand new Genesis 3 female the effect seems to go away. That doesn't solve my problem though, since I plan on using the products on morphed figures.

Is the hair a figure? if it's a prop you could try scaling it up a bit, see if the net result is a good fit. It could also be that one or more of your morphs isn't properly set to AutoFollow, and so isn't being transferred into the hair (though that would be odd given that it initially fits).

Tried the Krayon hair on the base G3F and on 3DU's Haley.... the hair loaded fine, with no scaling problem on both characters, and also a good fit with smoothing set to off. In other words, I could not replicate the problem you've got with this hair.

I'm not unfamiliair with the problem you describe, but almost always that problem only occurs for me when I try to 'fit' older (Victoria4 for example) hair models to any of the genesis characters. In such cases it usually is better not to 'fit' the hair to the charcter but to parent it. (In my own experience, parenting a hair usually works better.....)

  • Thank you for trying to help and I actually think you are both right. It does look like the hair is trying to fit a slightly smaller head and that could mean there is a problem with the morphs I think. Is there a way for me to set them to AutoFollow or is that an advanced project? In any case, I am definately going to try to parent the hair instead and see what happens. Thank you again.

  • @glaseye: Sorry, one more question: would you parent the hair to the head or the figure?

    Mathias7212,

I had the excact same problems as you're having with this hair. I tried tweaking it a few different ways and it still didn't work for me. I eneded up just chooseing a different hair style all together. I have had some success using Krayon hair in the past but it seems to be a finicky hair style.

On the base figure (Genesis 3 female) go to the Parameters pane and look in the Currently Used group - that should show all the non-zero morphs. For each, click the gear icon on the slider and then Parameter Settings - if it's a morph the type should be Modifier/Shape (bear in mind that it won't always be clear if soemthing isn't a morph - if in doubt ask) and in those cases the AutoFollow check-box should be set.

Parenting to the head, so the hair will follow the head movement (you may have to manually adjust the hair for the movement, but, again in my own experience, manually correcting usually gives a better result then the 'automated' adjustment when the hair would be 'fit/conformed' to the character).
