DAZ Runtimes

Hi folks. I recently had an issue and had to restore all my Poser Runtime directories. Yes, I know this is a Daz forum, bear with me please.

I've been putting off installing DS and getting familiar with it for a while. Considering I have a nice Nividia card on my comp, I suppose that's a little silly. I've been using Poser and Vue for many years, so I'm technically not new to this. But I have not used DS in many years.

My question is this: In the setup, can I have multiple runtimes in DS like I do in Poser? I have 22 runtimes in Poser, all broken down into categories, like Poses for Mill Gen 4, Lights, Plants, Architecture..you get the idea. All I want to know is can I do the same thing in DS?

I've noticed along the years people complaining about issues with DS and I prefer to set this up right from the get go. If this has already been answered, my sincere apologies and please point me to the answer, casue there is so much info on these boards, one can get lost in it.

Yes, you can have multiple runtimes, but you have to "inform" DAZ Studio about it in the Content Directory Manager. Also, you have to make sure you make the directory known to both the DAZ and the Poser format folders. (This here is for 4.8 and covers manual install of non-DAZ content, but it pretty much is the same what you are trying to do: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/927004/#Comment_927004 )

Though, I personally prefer to install the content in one directory (using DIm, for example), and then use categories to sort things to my heart's content, without disturbing the actual file structure.

  • DAZ will warn you if you have more than 10 run times, but many users have huge runtimes. but I most of my content is poser based; and I use the catagories DB in a manner much like you describe. You poser runtimes should be in as is; just keep you DAZ stuff in its own library.

DAZ will warn you if you have more than 10 run times

Note that this feature was added in an early version of D|S, many years ago, when the average Studio user had a much less powerful computer and a much less capable OS than nowadays. It was never really a "things will break" warning, more of a "things might slow down a bit" warning.

So, it's better to have one runtime and make a bunch of categories instead? I'm still reinstalling content for Poser, but when I'm done I plan to install the latest version of DS. What about external drives? All my content is currently stored on an external drive, well will be again. Can I do that with DS? Or does it have to be located in the same directory where DS is installed?

Please note that Poser and Vue are NOT installed in my program files, rather they are installed in a directory outside of that called 3D. That is where I had planned to install DS too.

Entirely up to you; that warning after ten runtimes is really obsolete now, any modern or even not-so-modern computer can easily handle that many and more.

Not a problem; all you need to do is point the settings in the D|S Content Directory Manager at your existing content locations.
