Best hair for close-up (i.e. portraiture) rendering?
in The Commons
I've been using the various hair models from outoftouch and have been impressed with how they render for close-up portraits. They seem a lot more realistic than a lot of the other hair options in the store. Some of the goldtassel stuff seems okay, too, but not quite as good as outoftouch.
Are there any other good hair models that approach or match a similar level of realism?

Seema Hair is fantastic (as well as many other SWAM hairs). http://www.daz3d.com/seema-hair-for-genesis-3-female-s
I'd list AprilYSH hairs individually, but I couldn't pick just one. http://www.daz3d.com/aprilysh
Same with goldtassel's stuff. http://www.daz3d.com/goldtassel
Very often the shaders are what will make the biggest difference. I use Slosh's UHT2 and the UHT2 Fantasy Addon (as well Draagonstorm's recipe builder for it) a LOT (read always) for added realism with hair. He's done a fantastic job of getting a realistic shine without baked in highlights or the photoshopped hair model effect in shampoo ads (keep in mind you need light to reflect off of hair). The tiling presets will help immensely especially with older hairs.

OOT, imo, has the most realistic looking hair right now. Other hairs, while some come close, just don't quite match that level of realism - again, just my opinion. Although, depending on the shaders, you CAN get pretty close to realism with some of the older hair even. Like the hair in my icon pic - that's a hair made for Victoria 4. So, yeah, a lot of the time it comes down to the shader.
Thank you both! The point about shaders is a good one; I haven't yet started playing around with shaders much yet. I did take advantage of the sale and picked up UHT2, so I'll have to see what it is capable of.
And the AprilYS hair options look fantastic! Hadn't seen many of those yet and have already added a number to my wishlist.
Thanks again!
IMO, Goldtassel's hair is great for adding realism, but the ones I have tried don't conform well to more extreme head/neck poses, they do however look amazing for portraits.
OOT hair is freaking GREAT for posing, they almost always look great in any pose with little to no adjustments, my only complaint is they sometimes look TOO good. When OOT adds the ability to "mess up" or has more fly-aways to make them just a bit less perfect, then that will probably be my go-to hair vendor.
(full disclosure, I did buy like 3 OOT hairs just the other day and now have 6 of them, plus 5 or 6 Goldtassel, they're both great PA's) Heck there's dozens of PA's that do great hair, kudo's to all of them as it looks like making hair must be a mindnumbingly tedious process o_O
EDIT: Partially take back what I said about OOT looks like some of the more recent hairs have a "messy" slider, and the latest Georgia hair appears to be much more natural looking. Also to be fair, there are times you WANT a perfect looking hairstyle with no flyaways.
Some of Lady Littlefox hairs are quite good IMO, e.g. Shanda Hair. Here's a couple of samples using UHT2 Iray shaders:

(autofit has messed up the hair shape in some places which is quite common, if you just parent the hairs instead that usually fixes it. Convert to SubD also helps in some cases.)
Aeon Soul also makes some nice hairs but you need to get them before they pull them from the stores which happens (or at least did happen) quite often.
Some of EmmaAndJordi's hairs are also quite good IMO.
Nevermind. Forum being wonky
I really like OOT's hairs for close ups.
Katharina Hair is my favorite - http://www.daz3d.com/katharina-hair
Super Sleeky is really good too - http://www.daz3d.com/super-sleeky-hair-for-genesis-3-female-s-and-genesis-3-male-s-and-oot-hairblending-2-0
For any other hair that predates Iray I highly recommend UHT2 - http://www.daz3d.com/uht2-ultimate-color
