Anybody here use 3D Coat? I've got a problem...

Okay, I know that this isn't a forum for 3D Coat users. I know that. But I'm up a creek without a paddle and need some help.

I'm trying to get better at using 3D Coat and I recently exported some props I'd finished after applying UV Maps to them in 3D Coat. Only problem is that the props came out distorted after I export their OBJs from 3D Coat after everything's done! Am I doing something wrong?!

Comments

  • How are they distorted?

  • The mesh itself os badly skewed and distorted. Let me put it this way.

Image 1 shows how a mesh looks when I send it to 3D Coat. Image 2 is what I get when I exported that same mesh out of it.

Keep in mind that this isn't something that happens all of the time. But it's still frustrating and I would like to know how to prevent it from happening in the future.

  • Ah, you are going to Hexagon. Does the OBJ import correctly back into 3d Coat? Or into DS or any other application you may have that reads OBJ? That should at least help to determine whether it's the import or the export that is the issue.

Just checked. And no, it doesn't import correctly back into 3D Coat. It's definitely being distorted in export. Any idea why?

Not really. What are your options when exporting?

You mean what file types can I export as? They're OBJ, LWO, FBX, STL, PLY, DAE, & WRL.

I thought there was an options dialogue (or settings in preferences) for OBJ export. I think Hexagon will read .lwo (Lightwave) format, not sure about FBX or .DAE (collada) so it may also be worth trying one of those.

That did it! I just turned off the sharpening of the model, and it worked perfectly! I didn't even think about trying that out!

    Thanks a bunch!

Just to clarify, what worked for you? Using LWO after turning off sharpening of the model? It's odd that OBJ doesn't seem to work. :-/

Uh, I still exported in OBJ. All I needed to do was turn off the sharpening.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your initial statement. Thanks for clarifying!
