Importing obj and adding associated Textures

Ok I have been having a problem.  I converted a 3d model over from Lightwave 3D to obj file and the associated texture file (.mtl)

I am not able to add the texture file to the obj once I import it to Daz3D.  I was able to import the obj file with no problem but there dosen't seem to be a way to easliy add texture to a object once it is in Daz.  What am I missing?

I was creating a interior cave scene and it looks good in Lightwave 3D but I am experimenting with Daz and wanted to see what I can do.

Do you have materials set up on the model? Once the model is loaded into Daz Studio lick on it and go to the surface tab. Add you textures there in the diffuse channel.

  • I tried and nothing came up.  I converted the file from lwo to obj and the texture became a mtl file.  I imported it into Daz and tried to load the mtl file and it will not show

  • I will try just checking the diffuse channel..I didn't click on that channel,,,,thanks

You've mixed up what the .mtl file does. It isn't "the texture file", it's a list of materials in the .obj file, and the colours and actual texture files applied to those materials. The texture files (plural) are something completely different. I've never used Lightwave, so I don't know how it handles textures, but DAZ|Studio (the program; DAZ3D is the company that produces Studio along with other programs) has a defined content folder location with a defined textures folder inside that.

Part of the problem you're about to have is that there are many different ways to export a model from Lightwave, and not all of them collect the texture files along with the model files. There's also the problem that the .mtl file will probably point to where the textures were when Lightwave was using them. Which export settings did you use?

Note that when you import the .obj into D|S, there is an option to also import the .mtl file along with it. But this is not automatic, if you don't look at the import dialog and just go click-click-accept then you can zip right past the proper import options without selecting them. How exactly did you import the .obj file?

  • Ok that explains a lot.  I did finally figure out what I needed to do even if I went about it the wrong way.  Thank you

Can you help me with this one? It's a dress with .mtl files in the folder and I have no idea how to load the textures/materials.
