I'm running a 4k monitor for now and it definitely takes more memory than a lower resolution screen but I don't know if I'd call it a big chunk.
Why are you discouraging him from--with questionable assurances--checking if he can be spied on? Let him google it and find out for himself. I read in multiple places that some so-called "smart" TVs transmit sounds from inside the room they are located in back home to Samsung. Before being so reassuring, why don't you first inform yourself about these things ... and while you are at it, send us all a link where it says that sound transmissions are impossible (or a "great feat" of some sort) if the tv doesn't have voice recognition. You won't find that link. I'll bet you a gift certificate.
hi, i also use a TV as a monitor( mine is a 32 inch Technika) i always use the 'change desktop size and position' function in my nVidia Control Panel. setting the resolution to 'native' ( 1-80 x 900 for this one) can result in some programs losing tools or the Win7 toolbar nearly going offscreen. so i use the resizing option to just bring in all the toolbar and any buttons in programs that nearly wander off. i do lose a few pixels from height and width, but it doesn't adversely affect any app GUI's i think my desktop ends up around 1875 x 886 pixels, approx.
First, you are the one making the claim that the TV can do this. The burden of proof is upon you, not us. Provide links of your own. We'll disprove their claims as needed....
Second, only "Smart TVs" that have voice recognition features even include a microphone input. Even assuming it was a model which had one, encoding audio and transmitting it via a network connection would be pretty obvious to ANYONE with a router that can view upstream/downstream usage from connected devices (as audio isn't exactly a small amount of data). And if the network isn't connected? Just because a TV is 'smart' doesn't mean the user is going to wire it up or set up a wifi connection for it. Third, unless you registered your TV with the manufacturer, they would not know WHO the data belonged to. Having hundreds of thousands of data streams of audio incoming (most of which would be useless) seems a bit expensive for very little benefit.
And third, anyone with a 'Smart TV' is liable to have a smart phone, and those have been SHOWN to be able to listen in even when turned off....you have to take the battery out to stop the possibility. Again, unless you are under investigation, the effort and cost involved in simply 'listenting' to everyone and storing the data for later retrieval is way more than most anyone (even the government) is likely to spend without a good reason to listen in.
Given the problems involved, the cost it entails, and the mostly useless nature of it......it's pretty unlikely anyone would bother, even IF it were set up in such a way it was possible.
I don't have any audio cables hooked up to the TV so regardless if there is a built in listening device, which I highly doubt, I don't get myself wrapped around the axle worrying about such things. My life is complicated enough and I don't live in a world of paranoia like some folks do. Lifes way too short and quite frankly I don't have anything to hide so I really don't give a flying flip! Back on topic please!
Using my Smart TV as a monitor and a dumb TV so I only connect it to the Internet when I need to get an update, otherwise not connected (wireless nor ethernet). In this case no concerns about being spied on.
Well I'm loving the "smart" part of the TV as NetFlix loads allot faster than on my regular "not smart" flat screen via my blue-ray player with the built in smart features..
I use a 50 inch 4k television for a monitor with a resolution of 3440 x 2160 and I have found that this resolution is fine for Poser and the Vue Program but not for Daz. They have not made Daz Studio adjustable for the Font Type in the interface and you have to manually lower the resolution just to read the Type in the program. In all the different Art programs I have this is the only program that you can not adjust when you are using very high resoultions. I have been told they are working on that.
One thing that is important when it comes to these 4K televisions when using as a monitor or even viewing movies made in 4k is this.
The cables used throughout the system must be 2.1 HDCP compliance but 2.2 prefered HDMI cables. This is not just for viewing movies but conections from a computer graphics card.
This is also important to know if you are using a AV Receiver hooked up to your system too is it must also be 2.1 or 2.2 HDCP Compliant if using as a pass through or directly conected to your television. or you will not get true 4K resolution.
The flickering can come from old cables too. It did for me until I purchased some 2.2 HDCP 4K HDMI Cables.
Anyway, Just my 2 cents worth. Happy renders to you.
Sometimes HDMI cables do go bad, though it is sort of rare. And unlike old analog cables, when a HDMI gets a kink or anything, its pretty much done. And sometimes the HDMI ports go bad, too. Actually, it is more likely that a port would go bad than the cable, its pretty common. A small surge can easily wipe HDMI ports out, another reason to keep these things on surge protectors. And everything hooked up to it should be on one, too, a surge can get in from anywhere, like a cable or sat box.
I've never been impressed with the smart features in most bluray players. They almost never get updated, either. For that matter, I never cared for most smart tv's, either. Its usually just as well to use a decent streaming box. And you can always get a new streaming box for updates, that's harder to do with a tv. But recent tvs have finally got better at the smart feature set. Indeed, I bet you didn't know you can use a usb or bluetooth keyboard with many tv's these days, and some even support mice!
Still, I prefer using a box, game console, or a computer. I don't even have a proper pc monitor.
I have not had a Monitor in years myself.
As far as Smart Televisions, I love my 4K and it is a Smart TV also plus I have a Samsung 4K Bluray player as well and connected also is a Yamaha AV Receiver. Because this is a Smart TV, When I turn on or off my Television, It will also automatic turn off or on my AV Receiver as well as control the volume of the receiver with my TV Remote. Also if I turn on my 4K BLUray player it will auto switch my Television to the Bluray mode. I have my Computer hooked up to the Television so I can get crisp beautiful resolution and I can play music off my computer and it is all piped into the receiver. Since I spend so much time on a computer I wanted to set myself up and right now I am very happy with this set up. I lack one thing to make it all complete. I want to set myself up for Oculus Rift and enter the VR World. If I could learn to make graphics for the VR World, I would be in Computer Graphics Heaven but right now that is only a dream. But Possible
In all, I do believe the HDMI Cables make a difference, Gold Plated 2.1 or 2.2 HDCP Compliant is the Best.
This is an interesting conversation. I have no worries about being spied upon. My life is very dull. Any eavesdroppers would probably be bored very quickly. I briefly connected my Sharp 50" TV to my 27" iMac as a second monitor. I liked the result. I always have the TV on. I eventually want to get a smaller TV to use as a monitor. I can't use the default resoution of my 27" iMac because I just can't read the text etc.
I want to get on the 4k bandwagon but I just can't at this time. I don't have anything to properly use it anyway. All I have is a 970, which can easily play videos at 4k, but not games. Though 1440p would be a very nice compromise. I have a 60" screen, yeah, I like to go big. Needless to say I am not using a desk. I actually do my pc stuff quite comfortably from my couch. I have a wireless keyboard and gaming mouse (Logitech G602.) I use a special little serving tray on my couch arm as my mouse rest, its comfy. When I game, I use a PS3 Move Navigation controller, which I sub for a keyboard. I realize I am probably not like most users with this set up, LOL. But I like it. No way can I sit at a desk for very long, it feels too much like work. Sometimes I stream my PC to my laptop while the tv is used for other things. Streaming Daz works quite well, btw.
I will say the Recent Xbox Slim is a fantastic little box for 4k media. It can stream 4k content and play 4k Blurays. The 4k bluray player alone is a big selling point. This makes it one of the cheapest 4k bluray players you can buy, even though it is a game console. Oddly, the 4k PS4 Pro cannot play 4k bluray. The Xbox also has an HDMI passthrough feature, which many people forget about. Its a very elegant solution. All the streaming devices today require using a separate HDMI port. With the Xbox Slim, you can run your cable or sat box through the Xbox with this pass through. So that saves a HDMI port, good for those lacking HDMI ports. That is a legit concern, because many 4k tvs today do not support 4k on all of their HDMI ports. Many only have 4k on a single port, or they only have one 4k port that runs at 60 Hz (frames per second) while another 4k port is capped at 30 Hz, and any other HDMI ports are just 1080p. It certainly makes buying 4k confusing, because this is something most people do not think about. Using passthrough also means you can have smart feature overlays on your regular cable/sat. For example, you could have the ESPN sports ticker on anything (though I doubt many people here would care for that,) or perhaps a weather ticker. So as a media hub, the Slim is an interesting idea. The obvious downside to passthrough is the Xbox must be on even if you just watch tv, but again, this is only an option. Of course, the PS4 is a decent hub in its own right, even without the 4k bluray player, after all, not many people buy physical media these days. But if you only want to stream 4k, then there are many other much cheaper ways to do it than buying a gaming console.
Well that sucks. I just sent for an HDMI cable, with a 90 degree angle to allow for a flat wall mount. I wish I would have known this 2.1 or 2.2 compliance factor. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I also use TVs as monitors. I have a 46" 1080p as a secondary to a 39" 4k as the main. Did you know you can spread the tabs in Studio across both monitors? I usually put the viewport on the 4k, and everything else on the 1080. The 1080 is directly in front of me with the 4k to the right at an angle. I sit in a recliner with a table to hold the mouse. The mouse and keyboard are wireless. I have a 760 4gig video card running them with no problems. I don't know how using both monitors affects iray as I've never tried it with only one.

Ramwolff, Is your Television a 4K Television? If not, No need to worry about it.
As far as 4K Televisions go.
I learned the hard way about that.
This compliance factor is only for True 4K resolution. Perhaps you can cancel the order if done fast enough.
This is what I purchased and much cheaper (For the 2.1 or 2.2) than Amazon, Different lengths of cables to select from too. https://sewelldirect.com/premium-4k-hdmi-cable-6-ft-?utm_source=magnetic&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=alerts
I learned about this compliance factor the first time I put a 4K Bluray disk in my 4K Bluray player and I had to do some research as to why I was not getting the True 4K Resolution. I too spent money on new cables but they where not the right ones that were 2.1 or 2.2 Compliant.
Also like outrider42 pointed out. Any device running 4K into your television has to be conected to your HDMI 60Hz port on the television and a 4K television will have at least one that is 60Hz. They will be labled on the television what is 30Hz and 60 Hz. I am luck enough to have two conections that are 60Hz and the rest are 30 Hz conections.
Remember, any cables will work on a device that is 4K but to get the true 4K resolution you need those compliant cables. Anything those cables run through like a AV Receiver also have to be 4K Compliant
Here is a link to how I learned about 4K Cables. It will explain everything.

Now that is interesting. To split the Daz Interface onto two different screens. Wonder if this can be done with other software too like Poser and Vue.
Yes, this is an Interesting topic.
I asked about the problem reading the Type interface with High Resolution and was told Daz is working on that.
More and more people are increasing their screen resolutions for those Beautiful and Realistic renders and software programers need to keep that in mind. I have no problem with reading Poser or the Vue program with a 3440 x 2160 resolution but I can not read anything with the Daz Program unless I go stand next to my Television or use the Magnifier or lower my resolution. It is kind of slowed down my use of Daz because of that. Oh well
I'm 66 years old, have catarracts etc. I reduced the resolution of my 27" iMac from the default to 1600x900. My second monitor is a 24" 1080p display. My 2009 iMac has the 50" TV as a second monitor. I just tried using Google Chrome on the second monitor. I sat on the easy chair across the room. I couldn't read any text.
I'd definitely need to have a TV sitting on a desk in order to use it as a monitor.
Hmmm, come to think of it I don't THINK this is an HD tv but here is the link to what I have in front of me right now....
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U9U8RZQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you think I'm safe with what I sent off for then I won't worry about it but I do have other solutions in the cart now at Amazon just in case I do need them after all.
Ron, if your not on a horribly tight budget this is a really great size. Enough realestate to work nicely and everything is just bigger! lol
Richard
PS. From your cable link, What's the dif between the Silverbacks S4 and S6? I see they both support 4K but the S4 offers more length options!
You may be able to improve readability on hdpi monitors by changing the setting in the compatibility tab under the DAZ shortcut properties, uncheck the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and DAZ should be more readable.
I eventually hope to get an LCD TV as a second monitor for my 27" iMac. It will likely be smaller than my 50" Sharp TV. I just need to get serious with my finances!
Richard,
I think you are good with the cables you got. Your Television is a HD (high-definition) Television which is excellent but not a 4K Television. It is a Smart Television and I just love those. 4K Televisions can create Resolutions that go beyond what you see on a normal Bluray Movie but to see resolutions that good, you need a source such as a 4k Bluray player or from a computer. A 4K bluray disc will not play in a ordnary bluray player, You need a 4K Bluray player to play one. They are 4 times more detail is what I have been told. The picture on a 4K can be so realistic. The Tech for 4K Televisions and Movies is kind of new on the market and they are just now trying to catch up with converting or making movies for this 4K. Anyway, This is good so you do not have to worry about your cable purchase. As far as the differences in those cables, Im not sure but I do know that it is prefered that you use the shortist cable as possible from what I have read because of signal loss is increased with longer cables and they even sell boosters for this reason but I think that would be for something 30 feet or longer. I did a good deal of research about all of this when I set myself up with 4K. Here is a link that can show you a list of different HDMI cables and what signals can run through them.

FirePro9,
Thats a good idea, Thank you for this. I will give it a try

I'm not sure I'd really be able to see well enough to appreciate the increased detail in 4K. Also, I'd prefer to wait until there is an abundance of 4K content. Heck, I still haven't bought a BluRay player yet!
Ron,
I understand. This 4K stuff is not for everyone but back in the Day when Bluray first came out everyone thought that was King when it came to High Quality entertainment.
Now it has been passed up big time with 4K. You are also right about the abundance of 4K content out there. There is really not that much. That is changing but it will take awhile. My eyes are not so good too. I wear Bifocals glasses and need them to read and required to wear them when I drive.
I have to admit, I do love the 4K but it requires a strong graphics card when using a Television as a Monitor and the Television I have is not good for using the Daz Program because my TV is too big. I can not adjust the type size in the program and just can not read it without messing with my screen resoultion every time I use Daz. I figured I would find something that would not work so good with it and I did. Daz is the only Program I have this trouble with and I own Poser and Vue and several Photo programs and they work fine with it but not Daz. Oh well, I was told the Daz People are working on it. I do hope what I was told is true.
Mark, I vaguely remember that fixing the type size issue is a major feat. I forget the technical explanation. It almost sounded like a major rewrite of code was necessary. In the meantime, we muddle through, I guess.
This thread explains just how difficult it would be to change the font size problem.
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/58297/is-it-possible-to-increase-the-size-of-the-menu-fonts-in-studio-4-8
Ron,
After reading all the posts on the link you sent, It sounds like Daz does not plan to fix the fonts for High resolution. Wonder why I was told they are working on it.
If they do not fix it. That will be a big let down. Thanks for posting that link,
As that thread linked to says, they are working on it, but it is not an easy thing to fix.
