IRay Preview and Hair transparency

I've just bought the Slosh UHT2 product and am watching his tutorial videos. Somehow, he shows the hair in IRay preview mode in the Viewport but when I try that it looks all wrong because it does not handle transparency. Any idea how to get this to work because trying to adjust the settings without a preview is pure guesswork.

  • Perhaps you have interactive selected as Draw Mode as for me it works perfectly in Photoreal Mode with the latest 4.9

Are you using Perspective View? I've noticed that some hairs render very slowly and in a strange way in Perspective View, while rendering normally and fast if selecting a camera, in Iray preview mode.

Ahhh ... that was probably it. Thanks. I'm not at that PC right now but I'm pretty sure your are right.

No, I was in default camera view. I have perspective view in the little aux viewport but Iray isn't on in that.

  • I think I read somewhere that the preview mode has problems when dealing with multiple layers of transparency between the camera and an object.

    Yep,

preview render is a little simplyfied compared with the real render.

But some of the settings in Slosh's shaders are not the best choice. The backscattering parameters create a siver shine on dark hair, etc.
However they are a good base creating own setups for the different older hair products.

Well, I had made the mistake of having the draw mode set to interactive so that explains my main issue. I now notice that viewing the hair with a bright background doesn't help but a tranparent background is not ideal either. I'll try some different HDR dome images.

Interesting. I'll have to try turning backscatter off the next time I use UHT2.
