Two years later and still feel like a newbie

Why did I open this pandora's box? I feel like it's all been some kind of addiction, rather than the gift of creative expression and promise of future income that it was supposed to be. I hate you Daz!...... but I love you...... I can't give you up. My soul aches to express.....in 3D....... But it can't! Because it takes me forever to find assets or information I need to do it. Damn my non-photographic memory! I'm saving for a new printer. That should help. If only Daz would complete their user guide to include everythinggggg, in one place. And I learn better from videos when they are a supplement to written information, that I shouldn't have to write myself! Maybe I have special needs. That is all...for now.

Ahhh Sangreet, I can sympathize. I've been on the Daz Train for a little over a year now and I still blush to think about how much money I've spent on it. And like you, I can't stop either because the possibilities are so endless. Daz doesn't help either because every week they come up with something new that I know I can have a lot of fun with.

As far as finding assets, I know what you mean. What I do is I keep a spread sheet and I update it every wek or so and color code certain sets of clothing or hair as Genesis2M or Genesis3F. Also for my Environments that are hard to find, I have an note section for me to give myself a hint. Like if it doesn't load under environments in Smart Content, I'll put  "Content Library/props/ironman13" or whatever the file is called. Of course I'd love to be able to just play in Daz all the time if I have it open but taking these little and frequent organizational steps has helped me a lot. That way when I sit down and really want to mix it up, I can just get to work because I already left myself bread crumbs. I just open up my binder and say "Hmm, where do I want to mess around today?" I don't know if that idea seems like one that would work for you but I just thought I'd mention it. Anyway, have fun, hang in there and Render On!

It's very, very normal to feel that way. I still feel that way, too, even after almost 3 years. There's just so much to learn, and so many new angles even if you think you finally mastered something...

For the finding the assets, I strongly recommend creating Cathegories, and sort your content in a way that is logical for you. It definitelx increases the setup speed. There was an interesting thread about it: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/141636/find-your-content-get-organized/p1

14 years here. ...FOURTEEN...yipe!  I've never sat down and think about how long I've been doing this until just now. Lol. And I still feel like a newbie, even as a PA here. I'm still finding how to do new things every day. In fact, I just learned how to set up working directories so that I can set a runtime for my work files, a runtime for just Genesis 3 stuff, a runtime for just Christmas themed stuff. ANY runtime directory set up for ANY reason! There's no end to the amount of working directories you can set up too. This is going to make wading through my THOUSANDS of content files a breeze.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G24Q7jUt1i8 This is the video tutorial on how to set these up. Although Jen may have changed it to include stuff that I was unclear on. So if this doesn't work, just let me know.

Lot of choices there. 4 colors or six... or thirteen! Laser or inkjet? I like the ones that have a little bit bigger print area: 12 inches wide say: you get to print "outside the box" a little bit. Mind you I used to love the old dox-matrix printers that used fan-fold paper because you could just print a few lines and then have done with it - a sort of quick little chronological record of your activities, neatly folded. And when the ink cartridge got worn down to a dark gray they were great for printing out scanned pencil drawings: the steel pins in the print head would abrade the paper surface in a particularly lovely way, mimicking graphite.

We have a regular sort of color laser... it costs less than $400 to refill (three colors + black plus tax and shipping, or bus fare) so that's not too bad... on the 3-in-one inkjets that we prefer I usually squirt in a bit of cyan or magenta ink, to make the black cartridge last longer towards the end of its cycle. smiley  And I try not to install all the garbage that the printer manufacturer gives you; it's mostly useless adware!

There is a guy on F------k, in the "Hexagon modellers" section, who has apparently diarized his purchase of a 3-D printer circa early 2017. He says his "print" area is on the order of 500 mm x 500 mm which sounds like a lot of fun.

I think it's obvious that SOME sort of greater effort in the documentation dept. is in order, yeah.

  • Wow, thanks so much for your comments. Your idea is magnificent! I loooooove spreadsheets. I could do it as I shop. Marvellous. Thanks again DDcreate.

  • It seems I need a tutorial on how to use the forum too. Until then, thank you all for comments. smiley
