need suggestions for scene outside of window

I have a living room scene which has a window. I am rendering an animation in 3delight. I've seen tutorials for using UberEnvironment2 with an HDR, although this seems like it will spike up my render times. I've also seen sky/cloud backgrounds available. I already purchased CityScapes Backdrops Volume 2.

Any suggestions for setting up a background sky/light with minimal render time? The scene is outside of window and I'm really not too concerned about light coming through windows, effects, or incredible detail. I'm just looking for the best way to get something there without impacting render times.

Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I've been searching with not a lot of luck. Any suggestions for a tutorail for this sort of thing?

Well, there are various options, depending on just how much/what you will want to see through the window.

If you were making a still, I'd certainly recommend simply adding the outworld in Postwork.

    Other methods include:

    • Go to "create", and create a plane primitive. Load your desired background image to the plane, and position it very close to the window.
    • Go to Windows-->Panes-->Environments. Here, you can either set a background color, or insert an image that will show up in the background.
    • If you need a bit more "Depth", there are three premade products that give a lot of mileage. They are based on the same principle as the first solution, but have a curved plane and a floor. If you search the shop, they also have quite a few presets, and you can make your own, too.

I do much the same thing with a plane primitive but make the plane wider and move it away from the window a bit.  I have lots of panoramas I've made during my travels and it's fun to use scenes depicting places I've been.  In Iray you can use the image in the emissive slot and bump it up a bit for vibrant night scenes.

  • Thanks for the advice.

With a product like CityScapes or Multiplane Cyclorama, any suggestions on how to get a sky that renders quickly in 3delight? I'm assuming I need at least clouds behind scene. Maybe put another plane further back with a photo of clouds? Any product suggestions for this?

Also, as an alternative, any suggestion on where to find panoramas that can be used, maybe with whole background included?

    Thanks for all the help.

    Hi,

I think we have too less informations about the specifics of your set.
So I only can guess whether the skydomes of glasseye may fit your needs.

  • I'm still building set so it's hard to say. I'm looking to build it in a way that has a scense (nature or city) outside of a window, but with minimal 3delight render times. For the sky, seems like the skydome might spike up render times so maybe a photo on a plane is the way to go. Then maybe I point a spot or distant light at that plane?

I've even thought about putting a purchased blind or curtain in front of window, but finding the correct size is difficult.

Andy is correct. Perhaps if you show us what you have in mind, help is easier.

Other than that, these sets usually provide good "sky": http://www.daz3d.com/speed-render-stages or http://www.daz3d.com/bwc-skies-the-bundle but I have no idea if this is what you are looking for.

Also, if you really want to speed up your 3DL renders, have you already looked into AOA lights? This set is highly recommended. http://www.daz3d.com/advanced-daz-studio-light-bundle

If you use a skydome in combination with the city scape, you'll get a gap at the ground. So the question is, what is between the city and your house?

  • BeeMKay - thank you. I purchased AOA lights and love them. I will check out the links for the Skydomes.

So it seems like my two options for a sky are using a Skydome or using an image on a plane (with a sky in image). My guess is the Skydome with lighting will take much longer to render than just a simple image on plane?

With the Cityscape scene, I planned on just moving it up so no ground is visible. So it would be like a window several stories up in a highrise.

The skydome doesn't add significantly to rendering times.

Though, honestly, I'd perhaps render a background image first, consisting of the skydome and the cityscape, and then put that on the single plane moved close to the window. If you prepare different "day/Nightime" background images, you can replace them quickly and easily.

  • BeeMKay - Sounds great - thanks for the advice.
