How do I render a darker scene?

I am trying to do something with dramatic lighting (chiaroscuro).  I have a spot light set up, and in the preview it looks rather dim, frankly...  But when I render I get a very bright image, with some amount of contrast but no real darks.  I'm thinking this might be a render setting?  How do I get some real shadows?

Do I have to adjust ambient light?  Do I have to turn shadows on?  I don't know how to do either.

I picked up "advanced ambient light" but I'm not having any luck.  Any tips for getting some contrasty renders?

Thanks!

  • Could be headlamp on your camera is activated. Go to your scene tab, select your camera and then in the parameters tab go to headlamp and switch it to off. Also, if you're using an HDRI image for your ambient light, turn the intensity down by going to the Render Settings tab and then to environment and turn the environment intensity down to the desired level. Also, you can change your environment mode to Scene Only, which will turn your environment lighting off and give you more control using your scene lights.

    Hope that helps

Are you using Iray or 3dl to render; the Advanced Ambient lights don't work in Iray.

Post an image (a WIP) of what you've got so far. That will help determine what's going on so that we can advise you better.
