OT: Samsung Galaxy Tablet Pro 12.2 issue

Hi,

Not sure if anyone has a Samsung tablet here but just recently it started rebooting itself if the battery goes below 55%.  For those that want to say "invest in an iPad" I have no desire to do that.  I love my tablet.  It's 12.2" screen makes it easier on my eyes and is more affordable than iPads.  Back to the issue.... There was a sort of fix that I did try, where you get it to go into repair mode and you can clear out the system's cache.  That didn't work at all so aside from trying to reset the tablet completely is there some advice anyone can offer about this issue?  That's the issue I have with devices like this this don't allow us to open the back and replace the battery.  I don't even think you can do that with most of the newer phones now either.  Very off putting.

Thanks so much

Rich

I have one of those, they are great. There are videos on youtube on how to open them, if you're feeling brave enough. There is also a known problem with weak joints on the battery connector, which expand with heat. That in turn triggers the voltage sensor which thinks it's out of charge and might even be the cause of the reboots. Probably best to take it to a Samsung dealer unless you're a master with a spudger!

I kinda figured it was something out of my abilities.  We do have a few little fix it shops near where I live.  One right in front of the  gym I attend so I may bring it along with me and see what he can do and how much it will cost me.  Thanks for the reply!

How old is it? It could be an issue with the battery going bad. Its also possible if it was dropped or flexed (like maybe in a backpack or something) that the battery could have been damaged causing this problem.

Only about a year and 4 months old.  I've never dropped it and it's in a stiff cover protector to keep from flexing it.

It doesn't necessarily have to be bent or flexed to get damaged. It could also be sat on. Left in a car, or just lots of use and recharge cycles, or the use of aftermarket cables and chargers.

Sadly the batteries in these things are not designed to last. But having issues at 55% is pretty premature. I've had stuff that starts dying at 10~25% after a couple of years.

If you've tried resetting and doing all the software tricks you can, then by elimination that leaves the battery. It could be an app giving you issues, but I don't see why it would be so specific to your battery state. I wonder if you took the battery out if you could see that it is bulging.

I am guessing that you are no longer in a warranty, but if you are, take advantage of it. I looked this tablet up and this one looks very easy to open up, one of the easier Samsung devices to take apart for sure. The phones are practically glued together, but this tablet's back looks to come off very easily. Any little plastic shimmy could work, like those plastic spackle spreaders or even an old credit card. The parts inside are all modular, and most of the fancy stuff you want to avoid is safely tucked away from the battery, so you are much less likely to mess up something.

I found a little video that shows it all step by step.

If nothing else, you could pop it open to see if the battery is bulging anywhere. You could reseat the cable, and who knows, maybe that would work.

If you replace it, the trickiest part would be the ribbon cables. They are very easy to do, but they are also very easy to mess up if you don't pay attention.

I don't know If I would get an aftermarket battery, but it is difficult to buy official ones, and many places that claim to have official ones are fake. So I am honestly not sure who to trust. Even the repair shop would likely replace your battery with an aftermarket one. But hopefully they would know what brands are respectable. I've used Anker (from Amazon) in my old phones, they seem alright, I don't know if they make tablet batteries.
