How do you guarantee instances get created in the same position as the original?  I've ungrouped my original item prior to creating the instance, but when I create the instance, sometimes it is rotated or moved slightly.  There appears to be no difference in the parameter settings between the original and the instance, even though they aren't in the same position.

Assuming you are not using one of the plugins, like UltraScatter, creating a group of instances will not put the instances in the same position as the original. If you create instances one at a time, the new instance will be in the same position, (at least in the older 4.9 beta installed on this machine. The other computer isn't running at the moment.)

Here's what I do when I want a group of instances to have the same location as the original, (usually as a starting point,)

    1. I Parent the original to the Instances group, making sure "Parent in place" is selected.
    2. I select the original object and copy the parameters, (ctrl+c).
    3. I select each instance within the group and paste the parameters, (ctrl+v).
    4. I then Parent the original object to None, (or back to the object it was parented to before creating the instance group.)

    I hope this helps.

I'm just trying to create one instance in this test case, not a group.  I'm using 4.8.  Often it works fine, but sometimes (such as in this case) it does not.  It seems to be related to the item or scene I'm trying to instance, when it hasn't worked it continues to not work, I usually give up and manually position it, although I haven't really paid close attention until now.  Here are screenshots

Ok, I've discovered that if I set X Rotate to 0 on the original item, the instance works fine.  Tried it with a primitive plane too.  Apparently you can't (correctly) instance objects that have been rotated about the X axis?  Rotation about the other two axes is fine though.

I found that if you select the 3rd option, "Parent to selected item" then the new instance gets created in the exact spot as the original, you can then unparent it.
