Questions about licensing

Are the licensing fees just for games or other things? If I wanted to make a 3D model using a Daz and/or PA model to sell as a static model with my own textures, like at a comic book convention or elsewhere, would that require a licensing fee?

I have a lot of questions actually about licensing, is there a link that explains everything? Thanks.

  • If you are talking about strictly 2D images, you don't need any extra licenses.  If you are talking about anything that distributes the mesh of a figure made by DAZ 3D or one of the PAs, even if they are your using your own textures, then you need to talk to DAZ 3D directly about the scope of the game licenses and what you can and can't do but my understanding is that they are strictly for game development and you need separate licenses for DAZ 3D items and PA items.  Not all PAs have a game license.

You can find the Eula here which covers 2D images.

Well, I didn't mean the mesh, but a 3D printed 3D product. No one would be able to extract the mesh, they would buy it like a toy or figurine.

But I do have other questions about a situation where I could potentially be hired by a company to create characters for them using Genesis or other characters. I don't know the specifics yet to even ask the right questions but if they ask me questions, I want to know the answer. And would I need to buy the license or them? Could I add it on to my fee? I guess I'll have to ask Daz specifically if there is no 3D Eula... And not even sure what department to ask...

3D models, by which I suspect you may mean printing a 3d model on a 3d Printer is a somewhat hazy subject, and would need to be taken up with Daz directly.

If you are talking about taking an actual Daz 3d product, and one or more Daz PA products and then turning them into something like a static OBJ type model (ie a prop),  then that is totally not allowed, is completely against the Daz 3D End User license Agreement and would thus violate the license you agreed to when your purchased the original models.

THere is no license availalbe that would allow that, and I don't think there will ever be one.  It will not be covered by a Game Dev License.

  • At the moment, I believe that 3D printing of DAZ figures is only for personal use.  Again, you would have to contact DAZ 3D directly for a more in-depth answer to that question.

Apart from Daz not offering commercial licenses for physical 3D art, considering what they ask for a game license, the cost of any license for physical goods could mean a considerable outlay. There are many other options available for creating physical 3D artwork from meshes, including free assets that are perfectly good for the relatively low resolution of a figurine. Before going down this road, though, it's best to consider how the model will be made. Unless you go with very high end equipment (think $$$), 3D printing generally lacks the resolution to make anything that a person would consider a collectible. For that you really need to have resin or ceramic figures cast from a mold. The casting isn't too expensive, but the painting is (unless you do it yourself). At least, for anything half-way decent.
