Anyone know what the DUF.TIP.PNG files are for? I manually install all of my content, a hold over from my poser days, and I am noticing that items have the .DUF folowed by the .DUF.PNG image but I am noticing that other items have a .DUF followed by a .DUF.PNG and then a .DUF.TIP.PNG It is a duplicate image of the .DUF.PNG image so I am wondering what it does?

It's a 256x256 .png which displays when you hold the mouse over a thumbnail in the content pane. It just a way of giving you a larger image to view the content properly.
Not all content has .tip.pngs. It's a fairly recent addition to DS.
Part of the idea is that it can have legible text with instructions - hence the .tip part of the name.
OK so basically I can remove it and it won't hurt anything?
Except maybe the author's feelings.
Not intentional, but when I am loading things and I see things look off because of some sets have 2 iamges and others have 1 it really sets off my OCD. I am sure the artists would understand.
Unless you want to squint at the smaller icons, you probably don't want to to remove them. It serves a purpose so you should leave it alone. I think your OCD would understand about not hurting your eyesight.
Remember: icon sizes aren't adjustable so this is how DS gets around it.
...and as Richard says, they sometimes have information on them. I love the bigger thumbs. The little ones are hard to see sometimes.
Well considering that I am not seeing a larger image when I mouse over the icons and don't have to squint at my screen currently ... I really don't see a reason to keep them. Always a pleasure to have you chime in MM.
Peace out!
I am not seeing these larger thumbnails that everyone is talking about. My library is set vertically to mimic Poser, how is yours set up?
They don't appear in the library itself -they appear in the tooltip (if you don't have those off in preferences) when you hover the mouse over the item, or I think they appear in the Info tab at the bottom of the pane if you have it open and the item selected.
If you hover over an icon for a second, it will pop up. It should do it in Smart Content and Content Library both.
It's there and it works, simply hold your mouse over it. Always glad to help!
Edit: Digital Lite Design did a good illustration of it.
OK that explains it ... I have the tool tips and smart content turned off and disabled. Still doesn't show up in the content library but seeing what it is its not something I would use anyway
My understanding is that he said it didn't interest him, so he probably does want to.
I'm leaving them for the time being, but like Shadowhawk, I'll removen them, and anything else I see fit; if it breaks something, well then it becomes my problem. They also appear to be 'Smart' content, so of zero use, which means they are likely to get deleted.
Hey Nicstt, I removed the files and have not had any issues with taking them out. I did place them all in a folder outside of my content window just incase it caused a problem but I ahve been using studio for the last couple of hours and not seen any problems.
The ToolTip images are not just for Smart Content. They should appear for any icon in the tray, regardless of whether it's in Smart Content, Categories, Products, etc. If they show up in one view, but not the other, then that's a bug.
Of course, the *.DUF.TIP.PNG file needs to exist for a given *.DUF.PNG and *.DUF files. Otherwise, they won't show for that particular icon.
I wish these worked on folders too and not only on items. I'd just copy promo image for each product as a "tip" to make it easier to search.
I wasn't getting anything when I held my mouse over the icons, however if it did it would be more annoying to me than useful.
This probably isn't the best thread for this question but how do you code the TIPs?
I was dabbling and saw I can just add ".tip" and that will display a 256x256 version on hover over.
How do you you add the text?
Also does your meta data (author) auto hide from the .tip when you create a package?
I would like to enlarge pose pics icons with the hover icon tip and hide author package info from the hover icon.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, the bigger thumbs are awesome for some things like expressions and poses where it's really hard to make out with the small icons.
OP, you may want to hold off on the idea of wiping them all if you see yourself picking up a higher resolution monitor in the future.
Just remember to feed them some cookies about once a week so they don't starve there
What's the advantage of having larger duf.tip.png images and smaller .duf.png vs. just having larger .duf.png (which will look smaller in the content pane but still get bigger when you hover over it)? Is it just a loading time for the images in the content pane? Does anyone find it really slow?
I use them to add tips and/or instructions for certain files if I think it would be helpful.
I have already deleted them and go through every purchase to remove them before adding files to my content folder.
LOL I packed them all sack lunches before sending them off on a new adventure.
I've seen that kind - very handy - in which case, isn't it a new png linked to a 'dummy' duf file (rather than being the png for loading the object/map)? So for example, set to appear at the top before the actual files, there's an image that enlarges to say "Make sure you load and select A before loading B".
But for the duf.pngs themselves, does it cause problems to just have larger duf.pngs rather than pairs of duf.png + duf.tip.png?
I think you're misunderstanding; it's nothing to do with coding anything, it's simply the name of the thumbnail image file. You can have two thumbnails, one without ".tip." which shows in the content pane and is 91x91 pixels in size, and one with ".tip." which shows in the popup when you hover the mouse pointer over the small thumbnail and can be up to 256x256 pixels.
I think they were asking about the text that pops up rather than the image itself (which indeed isn't dependent on the tip.png). I'm not sure about the authorship / metadata info - if I were at home I could take a look-see but I remember there's a place to edit meta-data for a product.
I’ve linked my tip files to the actual files for applying presets, so my tip .png with text is not a duplicate of the duf png. For example, my “apply texture” file with have a small thumbnail of the texture, but the tip .png with be a plain background with text of instructions.
Ah, cool - I guess that makes more sense on why it's called 'tip' - so yeah, it's good to be able to have a different image / text rather than just a larger repeat.
I suspect they were called "tip" because of the long standing "tool tip" concept -- hover over an icon or screen element to get some additional details or info. Originally it was just text in a yellow rectangle to explain mysterious or confusing icons on a program's toolbar but the idea has since been expanded. I've even seen animated tool tips in one app to give a hint about how to use a tool.
@SpottedKitty -- The pop up tip can be larger than 256x256 if you want. I've made some that were 512x512.
@Silent Winter -- I don't bother making a separate tool tip image any more, I just make one larger one that is automatically reduced when displayed as an icon in the library, and then shown full size when in tool tip form. But then I'm not trying to use it to display for additional info the way Phoenix does (which is a cool idea).
