By having my graphics card in an external Alienware housing, it helps keep heat down and makes it very easy to swap. It's not the cheapest solution, but so far I'm very happy with it. And the 1080s and 1070s were still pretty new when I bought this (no support for Daz at the time), which is why I went with the 980ti. I do plan to upgrade, though, in about a year or so. By then, there should be some killer cards out there.
Hm... using a tablet to control the PC is an interesting idea. I have an Asus ep121 slate that probably lacks the muscle to run the current version of DAZ via remote... please tell me if I'm wrong... but I wonder how one of Wacom's Cintiq Companions would work out...
That's a pretty cute tablet there. I've used worse to stream. It should certainly stream Daz via any streaming app like Splashtop. It would take a serious potato to not be able to stream your desktop. The only issue you may have is the resolution might be fuzzier as the 1280x800 screen tries to scale your desktop's (I'm assuming) 1080p screen. However, Splashop has options for scaling, you can match pixel size 100%. On a screen with a smaller resolution, that means that only a section of the streamed desktop is visible, with added scroll bars to move around. This gives the best picture on a device with a smaller screen.
But like I said before, Splashtop has a free version for home wifi use (using the streaming device on the same wifi as the source,) so there is no harm in testing it out. The home wifi version is not a trial, and never expires. Test it it out at home.
Testing out Splashtop, there seems to be very little overhead using the app itself. I have not yet come across a situation where my rendering falls to CPU mode purely because I was streaming.
The only times I had issues were when I lost connection, or had a very bad connection, when I was away. I have excellent internet at home, but I away from home it can be all over the place. The state of the internet where you plan to be is more important than your streaming device's specs!
You could also look into getting a external GPU that will interface with your laptop.

Looks so good I decided to buy one too. That does not mean I won't build the desktop system I was planning to as well, it just means that doing so has become a lower priority. Now to find the drawing tablet to go with it...
Oh wow, cool I hope it works great for you because if it does, mine will work great for me. I think we both made a great desicion though. I'll have to send them a bill for my referral fee and point it to this thread. lol
I am suitably impressed, to say the least. It came in today and there is simply no comparison to what I had other than to say that I didn't realize just how slow the old laptop was.
So here's my first Iray render with the new laptop. It took about 55 minutes for a 850x1100 pixels. That's without any changes to lighting, only adding the uber shader to a few items (got to learn Iray). It's a new picture for one of My Own Comic Book covers called everyday heroes.
Cool; here is the sixth one I've done with mine.
Cool. I like the light under her boots. Nice touch.
