Why no bathroom in lofts?

AtiAti Posts: 9,182

Today's loft item is not the first one that looks nice, but I'm missing the bathroom. Do these lofts seriously exist in real life? Entrance, kitchen, living room, bedroom, all the storage space you need, but no bathroom at all? What happens when people need to go to the toilet, or they need to shower?

Is the bathroom only left out to simplify the 3d item, or do the real life versions of these lofts not have bathrooms either?

These have neither kitchen nor bathroom:

Maybe that explains the pose of the girl in the promos for The Pool House...

Have you seen the size of most bathrooms in the store? They'd take a whole loft appartment on their own, so the logical answer would be that the bathroom simply is placed in the building next door.

Only the pro bundle figures need a restroom...LOL

I'd be more concerned if there was someone standing off to the side alone in that pool.

    There's sinks!

And you can always add a bucket.

maybe the tenants all share a communal bathroom like many buildings do a laundry

  • nonesuch00nonesuch00 Posts: 18,723

I don't know, but I've stayed in huts and hostels in Europe recently that had only communal bathrooms but a loft in modern times is typically luxury dwelling in a high rent area and people with that sort of money demand a private restroom.

Now if you're talking a suburban or rural attic somewhere then the bathroom is likely downstairs, along with the kitchen and laundry room.

  • If that pool is yellow... let it mellow. If it brown... flush it down.

I would couple Stonemasons loft with either of these bathrooms.

    Outdoor Bathroom by Nikisatez.

Contemporary Bathroom by ImagineX. Problem with this one is Contemorary doesn't load correctly or fully on my PC.

For the Manhatten Loft I would add The AntFarm's Killzone bathroom but re-texture that. Even just put the tub out in the open... middle of the living room area. Or a more recent Themed3D bathroom in a corner of the loft. Bluebird's loft even. Search bath, bathroom gets lots of nice results for the fixtures. http://www.daz3d.com/killzones-the-bath

Well, I am doing a render now of an astronaut. Tang is not the only product to come out of the trip to the moon.

They're "futuristic" lofts. Did you ever see a bathroom in anything futuristic? Star Wars? Star Trek?

We went through the original series, the Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager, before we finally saw a bathroom in Enterprise, and that was only because they wanted to do a scene where the artifical gravity failed while the captain was in the shower.

In the future, people approach bathrooms like Star Trek, they "boldly go, where no one has gone, before".

I would love to do a retexture of that - I use it a lot but only in shabby environments. A neat and clean version would be very good to have. Only problem is that I have no idea where to start with texturing and I can't afford the likes of the Allegorithmic suite.

They definitely had toilets on Babylon 5 . . .

Of course you don't want that plumbing to go wonky in zero-G. Now I'm waiting for the SS Marcoor lavatory deck . . . . .

I'm thinking it's because it would be more cost-effective to make a separate product for bathrooms instead of including them in loft-type products.

Sure, but I would like at least a closed door or something. I'm not going to do too many renders on a toilet ;) but I still have this feeling that it's missing... :)

If the door doesn't open, someone will complain. Even if it is a door to nowhere. Here you get to choose where you want the room placed in the loft or have it like in a hospital with a curtain drawn around that area. In Real Life, I have seen the bathroom with no door but the walls made up of square blocks of glass cemented together like bricks. Private yet exposed, especially the shower part.

Bathroom humor aside, I think it's almost better to add your fixtures` from sets that provide various props. As noted bathrooms tend to be culture/country specific. I've seen lots of renders where the toilets and sinks etc. are very European. That's okay if a scene is in Europe, but takes away the realism if it's supposed to be NYC. For example, in the UK a separate faucet for hot and cold is common, though not universal; it's the opposite in the US. It has to do with not using cisterns for the hot water.

I agree with the others though that a place for the bathroom should at least be included. Put a door that opens/closes on it but leave it empty so someone can add one in if they need it. It's not like movies, TV shows, etc. never show something e.g. brusing teeth, shaving, looking in the mirror, etc. It just makes me much less interested in a set that leaves something important like that out.

Yeah, I'm bothered by living places like lofts and apartments that don't even have a place to _put_ a bathroom. Like, all the walls are in use and there's not enough space to put one on the floor plan either.  Ideal are those buildings that come with a small attached room that one could use for, oh, anything.

(But I recognize that it is silly, that unless I'm doing something expensive, camera angles can stitch any floor plan together. Still. En-suite bathrooms are dreamy. )

Very lkely just hitting it with some new "clean" shaders would do it. Ant Farm's around the forum (iirc)...you could pm them.

I'd hit it with shaders too. It is isn't a very swanky bathroom, the mirror is still cracked, and no toilet, but it no longer looks like a crime scene. cheeky  AntFarm typically does really good material zones, so no worries there. I used my freebie shader set that I put up at ShareCG, and used some of the Daz Iray Uber shaders for the metal bits and shower curtain. http://www.sharecg.com/v/86801/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/DG-Backdrop-and-Shader-Presets-for-Daz-Studio

I dropped in one of InaneGlory's ceiling lights, and there we are.

Nothing more valuable, IMO, than good material zone layout in architecture; gives us the power to more easily change stuff dramatically.

Impressive - I'll give your shaders a try. Thank you.

EDIT: As a matter of interest, what did you use for the water in the bath?

What about litter boxes?   I have not found a decent litter box.

No body uses the restroom in fiction it seems.

No body uses the restroom facilities in fiction for normal purposes unless it is a horror movie apparently.  I have seen one or two horror movies where the goal is using the bathroom.  Actually that is how penny dreadful starts.   Lady uses it and gets attacked while she is going.
