Did you know? 3DL emission

If you want Iray-like emission and realistic lighting?
Add UberEnvironment 2, set it to Indirect Light/Soft Shadows. (Set Shadow Bias to .01, you'll be happier)
You get some ambient light, plus Ambient surfaces become Emission surfaces (effectively). If you want to lessen the ambient light, reduce Intensity.
If it looks too grainy, up the Occlusion Samples. I rarely find more than 64 is necessary, and sometimes even that's wasted.
(I feel silly not having realized this for 2 years)

You know, there's also the AreaLight shader, which works as a 3DL version of Emmisve surfaces.
It's right next to the UberEnvironment in Light Presets.
That I already knew about, and that's great if you want ambient stuff that sheds light and ambient stuff that doesn't, but I've found meshlights can sometimes take a LOT of processing to work well, and slow down fast if you use them for, say 'every candle in this scene.'
What I like about UE2 is that it's a lot lower... fuss. You don't have to go in and redo textures, just... anything with ambient? There you go.
Also the bouncelight aspect is, again, a lot more 'realistic' than people think 3DL can be.
Mind you, the further you push into realism, the closer you run into renders that take as much time as Iray CPU. So you have to be careful. ;)
