New Desktop I'm Considering...
I put this is another part of the forum as well, but have gotten no responses so far so I chanced posting it here too.
I'm ready to buy a new desktop. I'm putting aside money and should have enough saved by next month to devote to this. I can't put a lot into a new system, trust me I would if I could, but I showed this to a technical co-worker and he said this should suffice to run features of Daz and Blender I'm interested in using. I'm not looking to do crazy/wild things with either program, but something like this being rendered in Daz, as opposed to what I had to do (which was render the model in Zbrush, and the background in Blender--with both programs crashing on me every other day).

Can someone tell me if this would be a good system to do a simple scene like this in Iray?

I wouldn't recommend that system because the video card is a GTX with only 2 GB of memory. For a lower price, you can get computers with 4 GB which is the minimum I'd recommend for IRAY. I'd recommend this computer for you:
https://www.amazon.com/SkyTech-ArchAngel-Gaming-Computer-ST-ARCH-GTX1050TI-V1/dp/B01M3UKNVD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483555814&sr=8-1&keywords=gaming+pc+gtx+4+gb
As of this moment, it's only $680. So you save 20 bucks and get a computer that can handle IRAY much better.
The only drawback is that it's Nvidia's 10 series card (their newest) so you'll have to download the Beta of Daz Studio and use it (at least until the Daz Studio official release is updated)...but that's a pretty minor drawback. The Beta works great.
Omg, I'm so glad I posted here!
I was so ready to buy it, even put it in my shopping cart!!!
Thank you soooo much! I have no clue about the technicals of systems, and don't want to buy something that I'll end up regretting/will continue to crash or lag with blender/zbrush/daz.
Bless you!!! <3
So, I'm seeing AMD or Geforce, or NVIDIA--are one or 2 of these the same, and is it true Iray only works with NVIDIA?

Noted. Sorry--newb here. Will do in the future--thank you!
nVidia makes the GeForce chips, AMD makes Radeons - only the former can be used to accelerate Iray. AMD also makes CPUs, those do work (though previous Iray betas had a crash issue with some older chips).
Ahhh, oh. I think I'm getting the idea.
It's so weird, it's like the more I read up on this, the more confused I get, lol.
I just want to create those realistic skins that people are doing with Iray. Something like this (though I'd have to play w/the eyes; they don't look realistic at all)
I don't need to like recreate a whole neighborhood or something, and I want to give that Garibaldi hair program a shot--and I KNOW how slow fibers can make a system go.
The only program I've not had that much issue with on my 32bit 9 year old system is Marvelous Designer. Bless that program's heart, because I can't begin to imagine sculpting close from scratch.
Thanks again so much for your help. I think I'm going to go with the system you suggested. I can't wait!
There are lots of products that add realism. I recommend this one:
http://www.daz3d.com/n-g-s-anagenessis-2-revolution
It's expensive so you can add it to your wishlist and wait till it goes on sale (hopefully it does). You can look at the images and see how it darkens the eyes and alters the reflectivity. It also changes other things about skin appearance. There's also a product called macro eyes which I'm going to add to my wishlist. I think the author just did an update for it where he/she gives eyes 3 lightness options.
I've seen that one! I just assumed I still couldn't run it on my PC, or it needed Iray in some way because of this line:
Just select the appropriate Genesis figure and convert all your surfaces for the Iray engine with the most realistic portrayal that you've ever seen.
AMD processors can handle running Iray in CPU mode quite well. I'm not real familiar with the 8300. I would think it would be better to choose a different processor, though. When I was doing research to figure out which processor was better for DS graphics, the FX 8350 had much better benchmarks than the 8300 or the 8370 which is why I went with the 8350. Most of the people I've talked on the forums that run Iray on AMD processors chose the 8350 and are quite happy with them. There are a few that went with different processors but I don't remember which ones they chose. I don't know if there are newer processors now as I haven't kept up with them. It's been a couple of years since I did that research.
I don't have a nVidia card so I don't really know how well they work with the AMD processors. I built my desktop right before Iray came out and had no clue a nVidia card would have been a better option than the Radeon graphics card that I chose. Like what was mentioned earlier, you want a nVidia card with at least 4 GB or ram on it. The should hold most of the scenes you want to render in Iray so that it won't get dumped to CPU.
Well, it's good that it 'needs Iray', right? According to your initial post, your goal is to use Iray to create cool book covers. Iray is the best choice because it's the most realistic (in my humble opinion).
As for your current PC, I assume it's old. So it likely has difficulty with Iray. It's still possible. With old computers, Daz will see your GPU isn't sufficient and renders in CPU. That's tech speak for...it goes REALLY slow. Perhaps hours to get a render out.
But, remember you can always build the scenes and render in 3Delight (assuming it's faster for you) and when you finally save up for that new computer (they get cheaper for better hardware every month), you can convert them to Iray...plus you'll have learned more daz studio techniques along the way.
Note that Garibaldi (and Look at My Hair) use 3Delight features to create the hair. Both can export to OBJ, but then you start adding to the memory used.
Thank you all so much for your help. I have to review this again when I get home, but I'm hopeful this system will be exactly what I need!
Than again, anything beats a 9-year-old 32 bit computer, right? lol
No problem. Good luck!
I'll def be back to thank you all again, and celebrate it up on the new system--just a heads up, lmfao.
clcny20, what is your current system specs? You may be able to just upgrage your GPU to a N'Vidia video card and gain a little more time to save up for a new system.
