Can Hair be Rendered Faster in 3DDelight?

I render with 3DDelight and as soon it comes to the hair part(or if it was trees etc)the render slows down quite a bit. I think it has to do with rendering transparency, right?  anyways, is there a way to make it render hair faster?

If you are using the omnifreaker UberSurface shader on the hair (and if not, you really should consider it), there is a setting, down near the bottome of the list of surface options (Surface tab) named Occlusion.  Switch it to Override and set it to something like 128.,

Or even 'off'; I find that a lot of times the hair looks just fine without occlusion.
