Disembodied hands?
in The Commons
Hello -
Anyone know of a pair of articulating/rigged disembodied hands that can be easily posed as discrete figures? I have tried to work with RawArt's Severed Man, sold here, but it's really nothing more than a Genesis preset with all but the preset body part rendered invisible, and it's nearly impossible to work with in terms of posing.
Thanks for any alternative recommendations.

Try using the system you are using, but zero and lock the rest of the figure, then place a null (Create>New Null) at the wrist of the hand and use that to move the hand, posing only the bones below the wrist, and you shoudl find it much more manageable.
Richard, what purpose does a NULL serve?
If you own Poser there are hands included in the base content.
Sadly, that didn't work at all. I created a null at the forearm (default selection on the Null menu?), but was unable to move the hand at all when selecting it. I need to be able to move each hand around in space and pose it, independent of the Genesis base to which it's attached.
You can then move and rotate the null and the figure will move as though centred at the null - makes it seem like the figure is centred at the wrist in this case (so rotating doesn't move it around another centre in a big circle)
Edit to add: I think 'null' in DS is now called 'group' as you can use it to group things together.
Maybe I'll try Group. There is a Null, but that doesn't work for me.
Nope, no joy. I was able to move it with the Group, but the hand's just not a discrete figure and will never be easily manipulated in space like one, as if the hand itself is the center of the figure, so to speak. That's what I really need. Thanks anyway!
1) Active pose may help.
2) personally, I'd pose the figure fully visible and then hide the non-hand parts once everything was in place. If I needed to see through while posing, I'd set the skin to something like 10% opacity
That is what I'd do, too...
Sorry, I meant do that for each hand - use one figure for the left hand, parented to a null, and another for the right, parented to a different null.
A null is a node without any geometry or functions, it's as minimal as you can get. A Group is different.
Ah - found it again now - I think I was confused because where there used to be 'create null' in the menu, it now says 'create group' (unless I'm remembering wrong) - but under the 'create' menu, they're separate.
I see now that the icons are similar but a little different.
Edit: Just tried placing a null at the centre of the hand, then parenting G3M to the null and moving/rotating the null - works fine for me
