Slow to move around in Iray scene

We're just starting to try some sets designed for Iray renders ("Ancient Ruins" for one).  They look great when rendered, but it's really slow to move a camera or pose a character.  Every movement or change takes a while and it's hard to move or change in small increments.  We're assuming this is because of the detail involved for rendering, but is there any way to set things so that it isn't so slow to set a scene?

Are you using the Iray display port option?

If so, switch to a different view, like smooth shaded/texture shaded.  Also, check the options under  Preferences > Interface pay attention to the Display Optimization setting (for some Best works best, but others, Better or None work better).

  • Thanks for the reply.  Iray display port option?  Don't know about that.  Had a quick hunt around but didn't find it.  Changing the display optimization did seem to help a lot, though.

  • Iray display port option is just to the left of the camera option looks sort of like a sphere, question is are you setting up the scene with Iray preview mode running or not if so it will eat up more memory and slow it down depending on amount of ram you have and the video card or if it's running on cpu only try using texture shaded only and should speed up and aux viewport in the pane on the right side that can also be in preview mode.

You are looking for AUX Viewport. It is under the Panes Tab in the Window menu if it isn't already open. Set the main viewport to Texture Shaded and the AUX to Iray. If things get slow with the AUX pane open then hide it, move the items/camera and reopen to view the result. The viewports can also be set to Bounding Box or Wire frame when moving things about. It is found under the menu Window/Panes(Tabs)/Draw Settings/General/Manipulation..

Great thread! I just bought an environment I've been dying to play with yesterday and when I opened it, it was actually as U_luiko described and I was bummed "Oh it's one of THOSE." I do render in Iray and am glad to hear there are some setting changes I can do to make it smoother when I'm working. I thought I needed more RAM. Great tips!
