The world lost another great from the 80's. R.I.P. George Michael!

I'm completely gutted finding this out today.  Our beloved George Michael has passed from this plane of existence at the young age of 53!

So sad to hear of his passing. I'll always remember Wham and the energy behind the songs.

His music wasn't really my cup of tea, but it's always sad when losing one so young.

George Michael performing 'Somebody to love' at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert (1992) still gives me shivers ..

Most people never heard of Rick Parfitt or Status Quo so I don't think that was meant as a slight.

Another famous person that died this year was Alan Young. Alan Young was Wilbur on Mr Ed. If you ever have the chance to see that old TV show it is very charming and funny. It's on YouTube or you can buy DVDs, although the DVDs are somewhat expensive.

UK band also well known in Australia, they only played  3 guitar chords so a popular one to cover in garages everywhere.

I had such a huge crush on him back in the early 80's, it broke my heart when i found out he was gay..  But i still thought he was hot. until I seen him last year on Jimmy Fallon he was 52 and he looked like he was sixty-something   he don't think he aged well, kind of like cream started out sweet. but curdled the older he got. . .. A real shame of his passing.  I love his music . more when he went solo, than I did when he was was with Wham, .  I guess you get in a point in your life when more is taken away than given. .  RIP George  is 2016 over yet?

Part of why he fell apart so fast was, like so many, he was addicted to some sort of speed.  So he went into rehab and when he came out clean he looked like he aged 20 years.  I think the damage was done at that point.  Will always be one of my favs from the 80's on up.  I recently got his Songs From The Last Century cd and it's really good.  Just 10 songs but still a treasure!

That one is wrinkled or grey haired is not a reliable indicator of health or even of age and, it is not nice to say George and others are unattractive because those wrinkles and grey hairs are not their fault and indeed those things are only an indicator that forces beyond their control did those things to them so surely we shouldn't fault them for it.

We also shouldn't speculate or guess that it was drug addiction or AIDs or whatnot that killed George Michael. George Michael's family and friends I can assure you won't be relying on our guesses so they and we have to rely on doctors. I had a high school classmate that for all intents and purposes looked to be in his 50s and he didn't even smoke.

  • I'm not a huge fan of his music, but my husband is.  He's been watching George Michael videos on youtube all evening.

I just can't get over how many high profile deaths there have been in the entertainment community this year.  It just doesn't stop.

It was not a guess and I was not judging.  I am older than George and loved him to pieces.  I was TOLD by someone in the know about what happened to him all those months ago that he was in rehab from his life long addiction to some sort of speed.  You stop that, stop coloring your hair (I'm a hairdresser for a living) and facial hair you look older, quickly.

Faith, Freedom 90, and Father Figure are my favorite George Michael songs. It is great that the songs will always be here for the fans .... but my condolences to his friends and family.

Yeah, I must admit I've never heard of Rick Parfitt nor Status Quo.

Rick Parfitt had a rep to match many rockers as he got through three wives, ten Porsches and £1.7m of drugs,  but It was, perhaps, a great irony that while Parfitt’s music was the epitome of conservatism, his lifestyle was quite the reverse.

Songs like "Down Down", "Picture of Matchstick men",  "Rocking all over the World", "you're in the Army now"  and others.  I can remember that last track blasting out of speakers  in our house as My youngest son prepared to sign up for the Junior leaders regiment of the British Army.

    As one quote said

Snobbishly ridiculed by some who viewed his stripped down brand of rock music as trite and simplistic, and who sneered at his lack of desire to continually ‘reinvent’ himself, Parfitt nonetheless built a huge following among the rock fans of Middle England, who for decades attended Quo gigs in their tens of thousands.

A "softer" brand of rock music that didn't travel as well as some.

Whilst I did not like his style of music that much I could only stand back and admire his voice which was rather superb.  George Michael is yet another great loss to music.

The Quo always seemed (to me) to be a British analogue for certain back-to-basics American groups from the same timespan (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Foghat). It's fun music. While the songs "all sound alike" to those who aren't into them, you did a wonderful job of pointing out a few of the titles that those who love that band find very special. As for me, my favorite was "Caroline" cos I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it. :)

I loved his music. I am surprisingly heartbroken to hear he passed. Absolutely loved his voice.

I think Freedom and  Careless Whisper were my favorites of George Michael's work. I listened to noth a lot back then. He will be missed.

I'm familiar with Status Quo, but I'm not sure if I've heard any of their music other than Pictures of Matchstick Men. I'll have to check out more of their music.

This has been a bad year for losing musicians. Gregg Lake recently passed away, too. I hope we can finish this last week without any more sad news.

If anyone is unfamiliar with his song "Fastlove," then I suggest you check it out for the smoothest mood and groove that I can recall ANY song having. And the song Freeek is an electrofunk masterpiece. Another favourite of mine is Everything She Wants. Love your people while you have them.

    Song To The Siren lyrics:

    Long afloat on shipless oceans

I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
    And you sang
    Sail to me
    Sail to me
    Let me enfold you
    Here I am
    Here I am
    Waiting to hold you

Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
    Broken lovelorn on your rocks,
For you sing, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow"

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am troubled at the tide:
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with Death my bride?
Hear me sing, "Swim to me, Swim to me, Let me enfold you:
Here I am, Here I am, Waiting to hold you"

I really wanted to, but I didn't know how well known Quo would be in other parts of the world.

I love 80's music, so it was a massive shock to hear about George Michael. My local radio statio has been playing George Michael's music throughout the day (sometimes playing his music for a whole hour)... Although they didn't do that when Bowie died...

I was so very sad to hear about this - so beautiful a person, so talented - I don't think things went as well as they should have for George, and I truly hope he was touched and blessed by love and happiness sometime in his life... - Cathy
