Would it be possible to have a "like" button for the Forum?

It would be nice to be able to thank people without adding a comment.

We tried it on a forum I am an Admin on and we ended up removing it. The members decided it made them lazy and instead of posting comments they just clicked the like button. They decided it was nicer to post a like comment rather than click on a button, and what if you don't like something? Do we then have a load of negative comments with no positive ones because everyone just presses the like button or add a Dislike button? :)

Also IMHO the "like" button tends make certain types of people post things merely to get the external validation to build their self esteem and then others who have liked someones post begin to expect reciprocal "likes" in return

  • Interesting objections. I was thinking of it for posts that are supposed to be dedicated to one subject so a useful brief digression could be thanked without adding to the detour from the subject, but it might be better to just accept that sometimes there'll be detours.

  • I don't like the idea of a "Like" button.  I do like both the laziness and validation and even the detours arguements above.  There's is nothing wrong with actual engagement and intelligent discourse.

  • Some forum software has a "thank you" feature that does essentially the same thing as what was asked for, but I'm not sure the one used here is one of the ones that does.

The main problem with a like button is that it can be abused..  Just look at some video game forums that have that feature it can create a rather toxic environment..

  • some post +1 when liking or agreeing to a post on here having a like and dislike button can ahve good and bad points though as anything that got a dislike may be taken the wrong way such as the post maybe considered someone was offended and the mods/powers that be then decide to delete the post or image and may not even look at what was disliked but just automaticly delete the subject happens on a few sites it appears from what seen and think it's happened to images in the gallery if you notice there's a ! in a red triangle that's a dislike type button/link which is a report image for inappropiate content message if you hover over it says that

    But, but?

Would forum moderators not "like it" if there were not that many lenghty posts by me to read trough?

If I could just click on "like" when someone posts an opinion I share then my mind would not get started how to phrase support for that opinion and then end up publishing a whole essay on the topic.

As a result ongoing discussions in threads that last for days or weeks would be resolved much quicker because now everyone can click on like on the first post that allready expressed the specific pro or contra argument.

The like button could be a welcome way for new users to participate without having to be forced to post with their name showing.

An emotion icon system similar as now adapted by facebook would give even more options to share what reaction a post evokes:

    Love heart

    Haha laugh

    Wow surprise

    Sad crying

    Angry angry

While Facebook relies on the evoked emotions, Slashdot already had a more formal approach with its comments filter system with can be used to classify comments as insightful, informative, interesting and funny along with a scoring (-1 to 5)  for each filter. It has proven pretty valuable in separating the wheat from the chaff without killing the occasional humour.

    Agreed.

I do like one of the gaming forums I go to. They have "like, agree, disagree, stupid, idiotic, troll, WTF!" etc. I can see that being fun for awhile, LOL.

A very short while. Sites that let people downvote or dislike things turn toxic quickly.

  • and things can be taken wrong way too sadly using again facebook as an example some take offense when some click the like button to something they posted same with emoticons but then again seen a lot taking offense at replys to comments here too as they read the comments in the wrong context so in that perspective emoticons and like type buttons can have advantages so many pros and cons

to like is not the same as to thank

    pls no like button

a whole industry earns a lot of money with this and it is perverted already

I'm ambivalent.  A 'like' button would obviate the need for a post that just says, "Yes.  What she said."  But the drawbacks described above are well taken.  How about a button that shows a hand, palm down, twisting back and forth to signifry, "....hmmmm... maybe..."
