Does the Update for Default Resources for DAZ 4.9 change the Default HDRI? And what, exactly, are the changes to the default resources? Thanks

    I initial and rather snarky thought was "I really hope so". But the truth is I didn't know there were changes.

    The update is available for download now in DIM. I have learned to work with the default HDRI; so, I guess I need to make a backup of it just in case it goes bye-bye.

  • We are told that the update is mainly for Connect, addressing issues with Sceen Builder and adding a new lesson (which is a separate download for DIM). It also deals with some metadata issues.

    I thought the default HRDI was somewhat nice for a quite, nicely lit, bland portrait.

    You're quite right. It's a mix between general ambient light and a flash that's behind a 2-foot (or so) soft box. It's made to represent a hazy day, and thanks to the indistinct image, it provides an equally indistinct reflectable image -- this is unlike those HDRis that use a graycard background for ambience. Going too far one way or the other would make the lighting too specific; either no distinct shadowing, or too heavy of a shadow. This way you can more readily supplement the "Ruins" HDR with standard lighting fixtures such as a spotlight. As a "generic" HDRi it's quite good.

    It is so blue though. Don't get me wrong, blue is my favorite color. But the color cast on that HDRI is very strong.

    Ah! I was wondering why the default resources were in my 'updates' tab in Smart content. 

    Along with three older Stonemason products that have nothing on the readme's so have no idea what the updates to those are.

    Not noticed but it reinstalled IRAY uber shader in its default location which I've had to move.

    So if you have custom places then check em, or back them up first.

    Thanks for the heads up. Since the update ostensibly is only for Connect, (which I use only in an emergency) I wonder if it's even useful to install the update?

    The image is of an outdoor scene, with a sky meant to be discernable as "earth sky" in reflections.So the higher color temperature is to be expected.  A brownish sky would look kind of weird. 

    If it's a problem, you can always set the white point to compensate. Just remember it works by color complements; to make it less blue, add blue to the white point. This shifts the color balance toward yellow, and warms up the scene. That would make it more suitable for indoor portrait work.

    An alternative is to modify the file in Photoshop or other program that can handle 32-bit TIFs. You can make the sky a Star Trek alien red, or whatever.

    Yes Tabor I know how to do all of that and how to make my own HDRI.. But new users don't and they are the primary ones who are going to end up using the default.
