I have a lot of fond memories watching him in Barney Miller. I was so thrilled to see him in Firefly and Serenity. He was was great actor, Sorry to hear he passed away.
Never seen any Barney Miler but the name caught my attention, and I knew I knew it, then seeing firefly in the URL the penny dropped. He seemed to be a nice person and his character in Firefly, Shepherd Book, was played with style and under-stated humour.
This made me sad. Years ago I was a guest at a convention down in the States and Ron Glass sat with me and had breakfast in the green room at the hotel and we talked for over an hour as we ate. He was a very kind and gentle man. We talked a lot about Barney Miller which he got a kick out of and said "you're the first person I've talked to at this convention who even seems to know what Barney Miller was". I had told him that even though I was a kid I recognized there was something distinct about his Detective Harris character because even though blacks were becoming more prominent on television they were still often the "generic black guy" and his character really stood out as a fully formed character in his own right. He told me that for the first 3 episodes his character was just "generic black guy" but then the writers started to observe his personal habits and incorporated it into his character. So things like Harris being fussy about his shoes and meticulous about his clothing came about because that was the way he was and the writers thought "hey! let's make the character like that too".
He was also kind of cheesed that his character got killed off in the Firefly movie without ever unraveling his mysterious past. He was also completely shocked when Firefly got canceled after only 1 season because he thought for sure a Joss Whedon series meant he'd at least get 5 seasons out of it.
I guess I'm kind of old not only do I remember what a great show Barney Miller was, with a great ensemble cast, I remember the spin off show "Fish" with Abe Vigoda (the guy people thought was dead for so long). Ron was a class act, and I was glad to see a new generation get to know him in Firefly. I wish he'd gotten those four more season's as well.
@Ghastlycomic That's a great story. Now that I think about it, Harris did have more personality than even a lot of black characters on television shows today; although things a getting much better. The 70's really were a time when they were open to experimenting and trying new things.

Yeah, I was sad that Firefly was so short lived. It really was a cool and unique show with great characters. Ron's character was one of my favorites. It's sad to see yet another wonderful person leave us too soon.
2016 has been so hard, this year has been a heart breaker in so many ways. Losing so many wonderful people has been a part of it. Florence Henderson, Pete Burns, Gene Wilder, Anton Yelchin, Muhammad Ali, Prince, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, etc etc. Losing so many beloved people along with what has been going on over the past few weeks, this year has been a real kick in the teeth.
Diva: I honestly think I'm traumatized by this year. Not kidding
You and me both, Will. I've been fighting some pretty bad depression over the past few weeks. Something I've not had to experience in many years. 2016 is definitely my least favorite year in a LONG time.

The Aliens are leaving... what do they know that the rest of us don't?

2016 was far worse that those of us who lost people who were far closer to us than images on a tv screen.

I only know Ron through his work. From all appearances he was a class act from beginning to end, and one of those wonderful actors who bring depths to a role beyond that of the printed page. His was the type of talent that doesn't come across our TV screens too often, and is a precious resource. I'm grateful for all he shared with us.

Sorry to hear that. Those fellows in Barney Miller were a crew that's for sure.
Yeah, its sad...I knew him from Firefly. Did not realize he was in Barney Miller - never really watched that one.
Book has gone to meet his Shepherd.
RIP Ron. You are loved.
Ah man... that sucks. 2016 is bad year for losing great people.

That goes without saying.
Part of me thinks 2016 is just warming us up for 2017....
Very sad. A kind and talented man.
Ron Glass was a charismatic actor who brought a great deal of depth and conviction to his work on Serenity. His death is very sad indeed.
Alex.
... Ron Glass....
Man, I didn't realize it was so many that I grew up with. Makes me feel so old... and sad... like lost friends.
