Well that simplifies things....Thank you!  So just copy the DS runtime folder over to the poser folder?

In the Library tab in Poser, go up to the top until you get an icon of a folder with a running man and a plus sign -- click that to add your DS content folder.

Poser won't see DS content though only whats in the Runtime folder.

I know that many of you use both Poser and Daz Studio and I just wanted to find out if that is a good price or should I wait a bit longer?  And just how different is Poser from Studio?

In my opinion, it's an excellent value. There's a host of tools available within Poser and it's an extremely powerful program for what it does. Poser 11 Pro is really what you'd want, though, as it basically doubles up on everything, giving you a great number of powerful features for custom asset creation that produces things you can easily use in DS. (One of the more commonly encountered caveats, however, is that they use differing material schemes, so you'll have to do some manual fiddling, there. Other than that, as far as I know, DS supports Poser's default rigging system, so even many custom-created figures created/morphed/etc in Poser can be used in DS.)

Great thank you!  Morkonan, pro would be nice but my budget is pretty much tapped out for now.  I'd like to learn zbrush as well but that will be several years down the road yet.

DS can use Poser's parametric rigging system (the one used for V4 for example), however weightmapping is different between Poser and DS so poser weightmapped figure (like the most recent figures included in Poser) won't work properly in DS..

If you have the DSON Importer and have installed any PoserCF (Compatibility Files) for content that is by default in DSON (DAZ Studio Object Notation) format, you can import them into Poser. I just did a basic scene in Poser 11 using Genesis 2 Female.

Oh and how many computers can I put this on? I usually try and put my stuff on my main pc and my laptop.

    One.

Well, that kind of sucks lol.  Oh well, that's fine, I will just not be able to take it with me when we go camping and stuff.

I have not loaded the new Poser Pro on my laptop. In the past I had Poser on more than one computer. It did a network check so I could not run two computers at the same time on my home network. One at a time was fine. Poser does come with network render software that can be run on multiple computers.

How does that work actually? It's called Queue Manager so I wonder if it just distributes a number of renders to a number of PCs, rather than processing one render at a time using the combined CPU power of all the PCs on that render.

Interesting.  I don't need to have it running on both at the same, just need to be able to switch between them.

I didn't know it checked that you weren't running two copies at the same time but I did just find out it only allows three current activations. After my desktop failed I installed it on my laptop, then Windows failed on the laptop and I had to do a complete Windows re-install and then it wouldn't let me activate Poser again. I had to contact Smith Micro support and explain that I couldn't de-install the old copies because they had been wiped by Windwos re-installations, they reset it for me. If you are going to de-install Poser then you should always de-activate the licence first.

    Good to know thank you!

  • You also need to check the situation regarding Poser de-activating itself if it is left unused.

I recall reading a long thread on another site's forum where it was discovered that the Poser GameDev edition did that.  (GameDev was the last version prior to Poser 11).  I am certain from reading about it that you can disable this feature but I don't know how to do so as I only have Poser Pro 2014.

Apparently no information has been given as to how long an interval needs to pass before the program dies.  It seems very strange to me - maybe if the program is used while being online a call home is made and the feature is to frustrate those using pirated copies.

I still have very high regard for Poser but would definitely look into this if I had a version that is affected.

The pro version is now on Sale for $75 for anyone upgrading (even from a non-pro version), so maybe worth changing the thread title.

I am not sure if I will take advantage of the offer though, as I am unsure if I would ever actually use it. I have a number of other 3D apps already collecting dust on my PC.

  • Regarding the de-activation issue: I took a look through threads on other sites and it seems that a message pops up to notify the user that the licence needs to be re-activated.  You get a choice to do so later but it must be done while online within seven days.  It seems to happen every few months.

Thanks Havos for the info on the Pro upgrade.  I looked at the features so many times but none of them seemed to sway me enough (those that I could understand, that is).  The Toon and other rendering improvements are of interest.  I happened to have spent too much today already on new kitchen stuff...but ...

Poser's UI is much simpler than DS's and it is MUCH easier to use and renders much faster but I find using Genesis characters very clunky and I think Iray is better for realism. For anything that doesn't require super-realism, I would recommend Poser but you'll probably want to invest in some Poser materials if you have primarily DS products. I'm still fairly new to DS and find it much more frustrating to learn than Poser which is much more intuitive.

Thats more of an opinion than fact

    I have Poser Pro 11

    - to me Poser's UI is a nightmare, its cameras a real pain it doesn't render faster its posing tools are to me almost unusable, I find Poser far from intuitive, it  takes me an ages to work out what is what and where things are.  The inability to double click to fit things, you have to drag and drop hoping that you have the correct figure selected, alone annoys me, selecting things is really tricky. Altering any surfaces in the material room is a nightmare as unless you have an added plugin you have to do each mat zone seperately as you can't select more than 1 surface at a time. No smoothing - so correcting poke thru is anywhere near as straight forward as in DS.

    Personally I wouldn't waste $49 on it.

  • Thank you, Kerya, for the link.  I thought that there was a way to overcome the problem but now I know for sure.
