Heartwood Question

I know it says Poser for compatible software, but has any tried Heartwood (http://www.daz3d.com/heartwood) in Daz Studio? Will it work?

I bought that too. I was thinking the props should work fine and all I'd have to do was to fix the materials for my render engine of choice (Iray in my case). Since they're all props, I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't work.

I did not buy Heartwood (but I am thinking about it), although I did get Northern Soul, which is a similar set by the same vendor and is also marked as Poser Only. I have attached a render of this set I did in DS using iRay. I loaded the scene up using the included pz3 scene. The only issue I had was the the leaves on the trees and bushes were white when the first loaded, and the spec and normal maps were not loaded. Since the leaves are geometry, and do not use transmaps, all I did was change the base color to an appropriate green, and added the missing spec and nomal maps manually.

In the attached render, apart from what I said above, everything was left as it loaded, and all the shaders are DS default, not iRay Uber. I reckon with some shader manipulation work the scene can be improved, but it does not look too bad out of the box.

Nothing I could see about this set seemed to strike me as Poser only. There are some poc files in the texture library, which I think are for Poser Octance, but they are not needed to make the set work in DS.

Now I am pondering over Heartwood, and the other sets by the Caisson, the vendor that does them.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it renders very fast, the render I did took just 2 mins using my GTX 970.

Thanks, Havos. The one thing I see different about Heartwood from Northern Soul is that Northern Soul has MC6 textures whereas Heartwood has MT5 textures.

  • There's some discussion of these sets in the Members Only forum thread on the anniversary http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1749406/#Comment_1749406

    Just a quick update

For $1.80 (PC+ sale with new release) I went ahead and bought this. Anyway I figured I could always retun it if it was impossible to use. So I did a very quick test out of the box  Each tree comes as both a character (CR2) and a prop (pp2). If you load it as a prop only the trunk and branches show up (no leaves);  if you load it as a character it is very slow loading but includes leaves. Textures such as the bark are not applied and maps will have to be loaded manually. .
