Can anybody give me a quick comparison and/or recommendation?

Oops, sorry - getting my products mixed up.
I don't have UltraScatter, so I can't give you a comparison. But I love Instances+, I use it all the time when I do outdoor renders. For trees, grass, rocks, flowers, ...
I have UltraScatter and use it often and it works great. looking at Instances+ though, it seems like it might have a few more options and the price it great at 64% off (stacking) right now.
I agree. I love UltraScatter but just the "line up" option would sell me on Instance+. UltraScatter is purely random unless you control it with placement maps that you create yourself - a powerful option but if just want them to "line up" it's overkill. Dang, I've been blowing my budget on the last months of sales otherwise I'd get Instance+ too. Well, maybe I can sell another kidney...
I have both, and there are some advantages of having both. For example for creating very large numbers of instances, Ultrascatter is faster, whilst anything over a few hundred by instances+ will take ages. Ultrascatter also has more control over where the instances go.
However Instances+ creates "normal" instance objects (which is probably why it is slower), whereas Ultrascatter lumps all instances into one final scene object. The advantage of the former is you can move or delete individual instances after the scatter, which is useful should an instance appear in a bad place eg poking through a rock, or is obscuring the desired camera angle. With Ultrascatter I am not aware of any way of editing individual instances, post scatter, if someone knows a way, please let me know
I have both. And, each has their own advantages. They basically do the same thing, but approach instances in slightly different ways. I find this advantageous because it gives a person more than one way of doing the same thing. Instances Plus+ came out first for DS and I like that I can delete individual instances after they have been placed and easily move them around or delete if something has been put where I don't want it. It gives me slight greater control on placement in some ways.
I'm still learning how to us UltraScatter and I like it, too. There are some things that are easier to do with UltraScatter.
If you have a chance to get Instances Plus+ cheap, I would pick it up. If you can get both cheap, both is what I would advise getting. At some point soon, I'll be putting up a mini tutorial for each and show the advantages of one over another in certain situations. I still have some things to finish up with that before I can post that to my thread so I don't have a specific time table. There is a bit of a learning curve with both products. DraagonStorm has a video showing how to use his product and I advise watching it.
Hi Knittingmommy, will you be posting your mini tut to your laboratory thread or somewhere else? I look forward to seeing/reading your tutorial as I have both products but haven't had an opportunity to explore either of them much.
Tutorials are always welcome. Thanks in advance.
I'll be posting to my Laboratory thread when I finish the tutorials. I hope to be finished with it in the next few weeks. I'm finishing up my LAMH tutorials for a hair preset and a beard preset for G3M. Once those are posted, I'll finish working on the Instances Plus+ and UltraScatter tutorials.
Excellent! I look forward to both!
You got a third kidney? :)
I'm an artist, not a biologist.
