Runtime from External Enclosure Box

I was wondering if anyone was running their runtime folder from an external enclosure box?

I am doing so upgrades to my computer and I was thinking of setting my home system up that way.

  • I believe several people are doing this - you do need to make sure that the mount-point (for MacOS) or drive letter (for Windows) remains constant.

  • That should not be an issue. Up until recently I had been using my original IDE Drive and its started giving me issues so I am upgrading to an SSD for my C: and a two 1.5T Sata Drives as an external.

Part of the problem is HOW the external is connected.

It's especially bad with Macs, because an interruption to the drive (usually network connected drives, but USB ones can suffer from it too), causes OSX to internally assign a new name to the drive.  Externally the drive looks the same as always, but since it no longer has the exact name, programs looking for items on it before the 'burp' can't find anything.

Network connected drives suffer from it the most...and Windows can have problems with them too, under some circumstances...

USB are more 'stable'/reliable and eSATA are even more so.

In windows simply you change the drive letter to X, Y, Z or so. All my contents are in a external drive, a WD My Passport 1TB. In fact Win 7 run in a partition called C in these external drive, and DAZ content are in the other partition in same drive, called U.

  • Its on a bay with USB 3.0
