We have removed several posts, as they were getting into platform wars -- please stick to the topic of Reality.

I would prolly still use Reality if I did not need to save 2 sets of the same scene since Reality does not convert iray shders well in spite of being promised the contrary. Reality lux rendering using only the sun or 1 mesh light with cpu acc no boost can give decent in a reasonable amount of time. As soon as you add ibl or second mesh then artifacts appear take eons to clear. As others mentioned boost modes are glitchy as hell. It's just simpler to work with iray.

I don't use iray and I don't use iray shaders. I load a scene be it daz or poser in studio 4.6. Other than adjust the skin etc. of only human 3D characters, I make no other adjustments in Studio of the other items. I pose the scene in the camera I choose and a sun. I do a test render in 3Delight just to make sure feet etc. touch the ground without sinking into the asphalt and see if I like what is in my camera viewfinder. If the scene is too heavy to move around, I view without shader textures. I tend to use a second camera to zoom in tight to make sure everything is spot on. Then and only then I switch back to the camera to be used for Reality and in the words of the great Paolo, call Reality into existance (I love watching his video tutorials on Youtube). The sky rumbles and the earth shakes or maybe that was my stomach telling me it's time for lunch. I am still using Reality 2.5 on my old Windows XP. I did buy a version 4.3 upgrade but that requires using a 64bit version of Windows. 2.5 is only 32bit as is my XP. I could try putting Reality 4 on my Linux PC wich is an AMD 64bit. I would just run it in WINE along with DAZ 4.9 to try that out. Will let you know how that goes. Don't expect miracles though as it is only 3GB of RAM and the onboard NVidia is limited on that duo core laptop. I do use that laptop as part of the render farm and it does bring a 12 hour render of a scene on the P4 1st or 2nd generation PC down to two hours. A second core2 duo with 2gb of ram brings the farm to eta 30 minutes. I'll post an image of the screen shot render. Old machines are free on the street on garbage day. I usually just load one item into daz and then load up Reality. I adjust the parts of the item selecting this as metal that as glass etc. I save it in Acsel on my LAN. I don't know where you are getting a difficulty on that. Maybe I will see it if I ever install version 4. Rendering in Luxrender is like cooking a meal. It tastes more succulent than fast food. Reality 2.5 does support animation and it does do hardware render very fast if you have the card for it. I still prefer the slower CPU method. Oh and yes there is Preview mode which is quick enough even on my old machine. A lot of the promo samples I see on the website were done using version 2.5.

Oh and the nice thing about ACSEL is that you can share your adjustments of the shaders with others and their's with you. Oh and once you save your adjustments the first time on acsel be it local or on the acsel site, it is always remembered so you don't have to go through all that each time you load up that item in any different scene you do. Oh and you don't have to spend more money on shaders.

A couple of renders with just the sun. Also a test render WIP of just a few minutes. Okay, done. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I picked it up on a super sale a while ago, and tinker with it, then stop then go back.

It does great results, but it's not as ... intuitive.. as iray is for me.

CartoonMike retracted his comments due to Hurricane Matthew, but I do want to emphasize i've had great support from Paulo over at the forums when needing it.

I pretty much only use mesh lights (generally 3, sometimes quite a few more) and ibl lighting in reality, and do not encounter issues with noise or grinding slow renders due to those factors, the only time I see anything like that usually boils down to insufficient lighting relative to the camera's exposure. Or less frequently, making a surface light emissive that has funky geometry (some flame props for ex). I also do not use extra boost or open cl, CPU accelerated works best for me. Currently I am playing around with 'how much crap can I pack in' building an outdoor scene with 3 mesh lights and an ibl, two G3 figures and nine G2 figures, clothes, hair, weapons, so lots of stuff in a fairly complex scene, all figures at subd2, pretty much pushes my rig to the max, but it works, and I love the results.

I like the noise I get with my renders. I know Paolo and the others recommend going to 3000 S/p (Samples per pixel) for still image or 800 S/p if its a movie frame. I stop at 80 S/p. Sort of reminds me of film grain. Sometimes I stop rendering after a couple of minutes because the image has a Monet painterly look to it when he needed glasses. Then I use those renders as a framed painting hanging on a wall in other renders. Can't post image here due to nudity. I also like the HDRI images for rendering with IBL. Outstanding results. Something else I like about Reality / Luxrender is the alpha key. Placing background images such as moving clouds I take with my Nikon or space scene outside the window in the image below. Well looks like Pret-a-3D removed Reality 2 from his roster for sale. You can now only get version 4.
