O'Bannon Bridge?
in The Commons
Seems to be the first VanishingPoint item in the store, an Iray 'port' of a treklike product previously seen on Other Sites. Is this a trial balloon to see if the market is here, or are more products planned?

Comments
Hope for more products myself! They have quite a few over at Rendo, but this is the first IRAY one I have seen.
Ohh It looks interesting but alas I am broke.
sucked me in with the
but what does
Optimized for Iray mean exactly? ? comes the lights set up?
I tend to avoid products that look like trek. But to answer your question that is the first product I have seen here. Normally this is content paradise rendo content.
How come?
I've been chatting with him on facebook.
The answer is yes. There's two Daz versions of ships elsewhere, and I guess he's looking at moving the Daz line to here. (haven't asked on motivations).
Likely.. and using iray shaders...the other sets are set up with Poser shaders.
I was doing some work on converting one of the old sets to iray last week (pic below), and they certainly take the new shaders, but it's a lot of surfaces.
I snapped up the Obannon Bridge during monday's Super Mega Sale.
(Again, the pic is NOT the new obannon Bridge, but one of the older sets I was doing iray shading to)
The materials are optimized for Iray, which means that some of them are Iray-only shader and will not work in 3Delight, or other render engines. Also, the materials that are texture based will need conversion and adaption. Iray only is not very popular with quite a few users who use other render engines, since it often makes the item hard or umpossible to use "out of the box".
Check out this thread if you want to learn more about the controversy: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/65698/vendors-we-all-don-t-use-iray#latest
Kit bashing fun.
Coming from the horses mouth,
All the textures are converted from the initial set which was for Poser. My intention was to utilize every feature Iray has and set these sets up for full Iray use out of the box. So what you see in the advert render is the same look you would get. No photoshop touchup, zero post work.
Vanishingpoint approached me about a year ago with the idea to convert all his sets to Studio use, (I'm full time Studio user, 3% Poser user) So slowly one by one I'm going through all his sets.
John would like to offer more of them here to DAZ. But that depends how successful O'Bannon is there. High sales will mean more converted set/cleaned up sets. For those that had the old Poser version of the sets should be aware these new versions, have new feartures, new textures, and the big one...the doors work. The ERC issue has been resolved. They are in essense new sets.

Honestly, when I saw the set I was going all "Squee!" and "Take my credit card, take it now!".
Thank you for converting this over to use is DS, and in Iray. The argument about Iray/3DL textures has been going on for a while; there are many pros and cons in this, i.e. in regard to some users using it in, for example, Carrara.
As long as there's no easy "conversion" from Iray to 3DL materials, similar to the "out of the box" translation that is done by DS for 3DL to Iray, there's no real solution, except for either the PA deciding to spend the extra amount of time creating 3DL materials, or the buyer converting everything to 3DL Ueber Base and starting with blank surfaces, adding maps one by one.
gonna be fun shading this set for carrara
hoping they left room for a rest room.
I got it but my motives where "unpure" - it was cheap and I needed a New item to get the stuff I really wanted at a bigger discount.
That said I'm really happy that I got it. I'll likely swap out textures (especially on displays) anyway, so using it with non-Iray engines isn't going to be a big issue. Sure its time consuming but its less a problem and more an excercise in customizing a model. Hiding this and that can make it kitbashable (as has been pointed out) to make it an excellent base for non-Trek images. And of course the Trek images.
And everyone knows that they don't need rest rooms in the 23rd and A Half Century. Its all done with transporters or something.
There is allegedly a restroom through a door marked Head just off to the side of the Enterprise Bridge, once you know where it is you can see extras going to it frequently.
I snagged this up right away. Haven't had time to use it yet but looks really good. I use both Iray and 3Delight depending on the look I am going for. Although I am starting to use Iray more than 3Delight for a lot of stuff.
Oops - I'm trying it out and there are some material errors. For one it tries to load a nebula image - for the Main Viewscreen I take it - from someone's desktop. In the Alternate material load the Terran Imperium logo, on the right side, is backward. Not a deal-killer but still, annoying.
When I was young I had the blueprints for the Enterprise and they did include restrooms right off the bridge. TOS, next to the Main Viewscreen, if I remember right. But if there are a lot of TNG extra's going to the head frequently, that is probably a reaction to the food replictors or something.
I picked this up on Vanishing Point's main site, along with the poser version, but if I'd known these sets were coming here, i'd have waited.
A quick test render... having quite a lot of fun with this! The chairs and consoles are great even for Mr Lekulian and his G2M GenX copy. Very usable.
EDIT: Here's an Out Of the Box render of the bridge in 3Delight, only using AOA's Ambient Light at 150%.
I think that the bridge looks pretty good out of the box in 3DL...
I was puzzled by the (missing) nebula file as well. The front window, judging by the material name, is, well, a window, not a super-wide-format viewscreen, I think; it does seem to want to be transparent (index of refraction weight). But it wasn't very transparent, though, for some reason, and I ended up replacing the material with the stock Iray thin glass shader preset. Vendor should definitely weigh in on this in any case.
He contacted me. A fix is in the offing.
The main viewer was meant to be just a window and wasn't mapped or set as a screen in my inital setups. I just went with the best glass shader effect I could dial up.
As a scifi fan, I found this mail screen/viewer to be too wide to be used for informational purposes. I do suppose it could be used as such but when I recieved the inital set it wasn't mapped as I recall. UVmapper might be a tool to use for laying it out what's needed from my skill stand point is out of my reach.
I'm more a colourist, writter, and graphic novelist. as for the Nebula issuse I have a temporary solution.
Start from scratch
1) load the set.
2) reset the render settings (that's where this nebula file is being loaded to)
3) save the scene as. and save it to the load file location. Content/Enviroments/VP (I'm not at my home computer so I'm doing this off the top of my head, I'll fix this line item when I get home.)
Start over, that should have it fixed.
The doors, I'm waiting to hear back from Vanishingpoint.
-Paul (I'm not the PA, just the guy who converted the set to Iray)
verry nice, Lt M'Ress would purr.
Is there a glitch on the product page? I get a 404 whenever I try to access it...
M'Ress... doing a deep cut!

VP said it's down while the fix the issues.
Same here, it seems to have gotten pulled or something. Searching O'Bannon yields no results.
Even the link on "My Products" page brings up a blank page.
This is a wonderful set and should be available here. A couple of very minor texture problems does not detract from the detail and beauty of the set. Frankly the Mirror Universe is one of my favorite TOS episodes, and its great that I can make renders in that world. Now all I need is a Spock, Kirk and McCoy (I already have the beard ready for Spock).
I hope this comes back quick. I have mine but I think this could be a very popular item.
It has been done before that when a problem is found, it's pulled until fixed...
