Any Filter Forge users?

  • If you're looking for photoshop replacement on a Mac, I encourage you to cruise by Serif Labs and take a look at Affinity Photo.  It's a modest flat fee, and I'm pretty sure you get updates forever. Their drawing program Affinity Designer is definitely awesome; the first decent replacement I've seen for Corel Draw for the market that (like me) isn't the least bit interested interested in Adobe Illustrator.

There are supposed to be Windows versions coming Real Soon Now[TM], but we all know what that can mean in Software Land.  [EDIT]  Their Website says the Beta program is open for Windows users.

Not sure if Affinity Photo plays nicely with 100% of the Photoshop filters...tytt, I don't open it that often. I have CS5, and I still tend to use that first.

  • I am having issues with 4.0 which I happily bought last year, and now they want me to pay another 25 dollars to upgrade to 5.0 they have disabled 4.0, I would happily pay 25.00 but I bought the professional one last year, they make me so mad. Now they are beta testing 6.0 honestly at least with DAZ 3D you can use it and you get FREE upgrade. this filter forge needs to learn customer loyalty. I anyone knows how to get 4.0 working again please let me know. I have complained to Filter Forge because its just not cricket.

  • How did they disable 4.0?  That's the one I'm using and so far I haven't had that issue.  I used it last week without incident.  Is this something new?

I used 4.0 about an hour ago without problems.

I don't get it... What do you mean they disabled it?  Did you change computers or OS?  FF's license is just for the one computer you installed it on when you first bought it... If you switch, you have to request a new license key... As far as I'm aware, it's not a big deal.... They don't force you to upgrade.

Besides the current version, I have an older version (2) that still runs on my old Mac... Newer (version 5) filters won't run on version 4... But 4 and below should work just fine.

The biggest downer about FF is that they frequently upgrade (some upgrade versions have been better feature wise then others) and if you don't stay current, once the new version is out and people start post new filters, those won't work on the older version... But filters for all previous versions should still work.

They are very reasonable there, in fact, unlike a lot of other places, their staff read the forums and often comment or help people out... I've had a few PMs with them about sales typos and web issues and they are very willing to help.

You should contact them, but I'm still interested in why your version was disabled.

Does it not work at all or are you getting an error message?

One last thought... I'm going to do it on my next upgrade, wait for a sale and then buy the Pro version with free lifetime upgrade... It's worth the extra cost if you find yourself using it often... Especially given that almost every year there is a new version.

I think it's totally worth it at 80% off... but yeah.

I would have liked to have jumped on the 64 bit upgrade (I'm still using FF4), but it's a fair chunk of change and there have been too many amazing products coming out lately sucking up my funds.

What I like over trying to make textures myself is the ability for most textures to be seamless. That's... kind of hard when you're just doing stuff yourself.

Not to mention that you can knock out a half dozen variations on the bump/normal maps/surfaces/etc at the same time at the push of a button.  The "real" price is crazy, of course, but that's just marketing.  I think I paid $50 for FF5 Pro and that seems to be in the same zone that most people pay.

    One word... Lifetime upgrade version.

Okay... That's three... But it's worth it.

Aside from the technical aspect, where others have commented, (yeah, my 4.0 is still working just fine, too,) I wanna know where you're getting an upgrade price of only $25. I'd upgrade for $25... but when I jump through the hoops, I'm informed my upgrade from 4.0 Pro to 5.0 Pro is $71...

    ETA: Cybersox13, I paid $80 for my 4.0 Pro, December 2014...

I have a license for FF 4.0 and got an email at some point saying the upgrade to 5.0 was a limited time offer. I guess they are really happy to strongarm customers, which isn't a policy I'm very fond of.

My adobe licenses quit working on my mac about 4 versions of the OS back, so I had to use FF's stand alone app, which crashed after almost every render, so I eventually gave up on it. I use PhotoDonut, which used to be Photoworkshop, which does most of what I need pretty well. But, they have embraced Adobe's horrible license rental approach, so I'll probably end up just using pixelmator for postwork once that expires...which is a disturbing realization.

I wish space aliens would overtake Adobe and release Fireworks as an open source program (or just sell a version that would run on my mac!) That was all I needed before it stopped working:(

I don't feel like Filter Forge is strong-arming me into upgrading. I'd be far more upset if they had a great deal to upgrade but never bothered to tell me about it... Or didn't bother to let me know the upgrade deals were about to go away.

Now Adobe and their subscription service is a whole 'nother story. But I'm afraid we would violate DAZ's TOS if we went down that rabbit hole!

FF is great. The license to use the output, even the presets output commercially is fantastic too although I only got the basic version,  I'll definately subscribe to pro for a while when I can.
