For my comics, I use Poser Pro (most recent version) and Paint Shop Pro 7 (from 1997).
I do my lettering either in Manga Studio 5 or Powerpoint, depending on the project.
Krita is good stuff. Could be more stable on the Windows side, but I think that will eventually get better. Has similarities to Photoshop tho it is much more geared toward painting. like Corel Painter.
For those budding modelers that can't seem to grasp Blender, try Wings3D. Very simple to use and only does box modeling. Has a decent uv editor too. Baby steps ;).

For those, who think Blender is hard to use, please take a look at the latest version (2.77a at the moment).
The user interface was changed a lot, when comparing it to the previous old versions (like 2.49).
Now most of the functions are accesible via different menus and one does not need to use only keyboard shortcuts.
As AllenArt suggested for Wings3D, take baby steps and use some simple things first.
What I find important to remember is:
- object mode (for creating different base objects)
- press space key and you will find a menu with many different options available
- edit mode (for editing objects and UV mapping them)
- left mouse click in modelling window, change the pointer position, where the next object will be created
- right mouse click - marks the objects (in object mode) or faces, edges or vertices (in edit mode)
I was also discouraged to use Blender, by reading so many bad opinions of its interface,
but when I've started using Blender for creating some objects for use in Daz Studio,
I do not find Blender very hard to use any longer.
DAZ Studio 4.9 for posing, Reality 4 for rendering, Photoshop CC for signature and postwork.
Very happy to read this news about menus. Will give Blender a second chance.

You forgot to mention dazzling daz studio. I hear it is free, as long as you do not buy any content. I do not buy content so it is free for me. (Walks away whistling hoping no one will look at my DIM or my product library)
I think I'm more on the gaming side... DAZ Studio (now finding it's useful for importing bvh and mapping skeletons), Gimp 2, Mixamo (online and free for figure animations), Lightwave and I'm getting into Unreal Engine 4 (also free... well 5% if you sell a game).
Daz Studio, Blender - fantastic and free like Daz Studio, but not so great for projection painting fine details, so Mudbox for painting textures, normals etc.($10 a month works for me) Paint.net, wonderful free photoshop alternative (I never quite got the hang of GIMP) I have the older free photoshop, but rarely use it. Occasionally use Adobe Illustrator for text work. Facegen is a new addition and lots of fun. ABR mate, also free, for converting photoshop brush abr files to png format that I can use anywhere.
Constants; Daz Studio, Photoshop & Lightwave. Off & on's; Carrara & Bryce. Various other plug-ins & etc.
Well I sort of guessed that from the computer software problems you've asked in the forums how to remedy over the past year.
Right now I use photoshop elements 14, Manga Studio, Krita (was free when I picked it up)and Paint Tool Sai (also free when I picked it up)Filter Forge, Daz Studio. I have blender, hexagon and sculptris, which I am trying to learn. I also just picked up the Pegasus 4.0 Modeller. A graphics tablet is almost a must.
I have Photoshop, Corel Photo Paint (preferred), piddled with Lightwave, Silo, and will be re-learning ZBrush. Have but haven't started on Iclone. Like SereneNight, I also have (and really like) many of the Topaz Labs products. I also really like Camtasia for doing videos.
So am I really that prolific of a poster?
No, but the symptoms of your PC were unusual.
DS 4.9, Photoshop 6, Wings3D, Hexagon, Roadkill, UVMapper Pro, Gliftex and just started to use Blender and 3DCoat.

Ok, I have forgotten to list the art software, that I use:
DS 4.9, Blender, Gimp, Vue, Bryce, Hexagon, Poser, iClone, 3Dexchange, Autodesk Fusion 360
and Unity 3D (for real time animation and rendering, terrain and scene creation, but mostly for the fun of use it).
Would like to start use 3DCoat more seriously, but have not practiced it so much recently.
For 3D:
- DAZStudio for posing and rendering
- Hexagon for modelling
- UVMapper for fixing UV's after Hexagon
- Photoshop CS4 (Got it from the uni) for postwork, textures and Hair painting
- Picasa for various filters in postwork, cropping and slight rotations
- Inkscape for making of various textures for my Sci-fi props
- Ocasionally Bryce for (mostly blurred) backgrounds
For digital painting:
- ArtRage, best program that simulates paint like it's actual paint, with mixing and all
For photography:
- Picasa, Photoshop CS4 for postwork
- Photoshop CS4 and Luminance HDR for compiling of HDR pictures
