How to make a sun [SOLVED]

What's the best method to make a visual representation of that gigantic nuclear fusion reactor in the sky?

I'm thinking of a beach scene with the sun right over the ocean before it starts sinking into the sea...  I was thinking of taking an image and mapping it onto a plane.  I'm not worried about the lighting of it - I can use distant lights for that, but I was just wondering how others have solved the problem of having the sun visible in a render.

Does a sun model exist in the store? I found lots of beaches and summer scenes but nothing specific for Sol.

Thanks in advance for your great ideas.

Well, I'd probably just use a background image that had the sun in it.

Depending on the kind of image, and how close the sun is to the camera, you might be interested in:

Thanks! Looks like exactly what I'll need.

You can do it in Iray without an image.

Set Environment to Sun and Sky; set the time to sunrise at the Lat/Long you want; set the sun disk scale bigger; set physically scaled sun to on; you can set disk intensity/glow intensity/add some haze and horizon blur; then turn the camera to face East (left). You can also change the saturation and blue/red tint for a more dramatic sunrise/setting sun.

  • The glowmoon product is very well-mapped I must say. Wish-listed...

Adding to Fishtales' tips: Bloom setting is your friend for dramatic sun flare.

Speaking of sun and horizon this beautifully presented product may also be interesting to you

Yeah, I've actually started using the default sun and sky a lot, because it really can do a decent job with minimal fuss. The big thing about it is that you either want to be using Iray Canvas, so you can clamp down the bright sky until you can actually see the sun, or you want to damp down beforehand. If you set Environmental map to .5 and add a touch of haze (.3 or so), then ramp the sun back up with Intensity 2, the sun disk is clear. You can then blend it in a little more by increasing the sun glow intensity.

Turning the Burn Highlights per Component OFF and reducing the Burn Highlights also helps to make the sun visible.

  • @timmins.william - Dude, pretty please with sugar on top make some sort of tutorial for this mythic "iray canvas" you keep talking about! Daz should hire you to produce documentation for them.  In another post I thought I saw you mention how you could make depth maps for 3delight renders with the iray canvas...  you're like a daz3d genius!

Thanks for steering me down the iRay path - I wouldn't have thought of doing it that way.  I know Carrara has a sun that, with extreme contortions, arcane knowledge and endless patience can be made to be visible in a render, I actually asked for tips on how to do it in Studio to avoid that pain...I hope the iray version isn't quite that difficult!

Apparently to make a sun magnetic braking is critical!

Iray canvasses are easy, actually. Just sound sherry. Render settings, advanced tab, click the box for canvasses, hit + for a basic canvas. When you save your render as Bloo, you will get Bloo.png and a folder named Bloo with Bloo.exr. Bloo.png is 8 bit regular image, Bloo.exr is 32 bit and you need to adjust it in Photoshop. After that it gets a little more complicated, but that's most of it. With a 32 or 16 bit image, brightening or whatever is less likely to produce banding and weirdness .
