Moving characters around a scene

Ive been messing around with Daz about a year now and I was wondering if their was a quicker way to do what I'm doing. When Im creating a scene with a character and an environment I will add another character to the scene. Sometimes this character will load in pretty far away from the other character and so I will use the x translate, and ztranslate to drag the character closer to the other one. The same thing happens if I click on one of the preset poses, usually this will move the character and will have to use the Parameters to drag she or he back in place.  Am I doing this properly or is their a quicker way?

  • Some poses are "go to" poses, most often they come with an environment (ie an office or a livingroom etc.) and are meant to put your character on a certain spot (a couch, a chair...) that's why they move a character.

Characters themself though should load on the same zero position in Daz. Having a new character loaded far from the earlier put in character quite possibly means that you moved the earlier character either through the translatetool (or the corresponding settings in your parameters tab) or that you used a goto pose on it. goto poses often use the hip-part to put in where the character should be moved. If you look at your character and it has 0 put in the x/y/z position on your parameters tab, there might be a different input on the hip or maybe even the waist.

you can also use the parameters tab to move your character instead of dragging with the tool, especially for farther distances that can be faster. but be aware, that most lightsets (especially portrait lights) are made to fit the zero position, so if you use those, you might have to move them too.

hope that is understandable and helps :)

  • Thanks, yes I do use the parameters to move them. I create multiple copies of the same scene and I do move the characters around a lot. I was just making sure their wasnt some quicker way that I was over looking. Thanks for your help!

Try putting your figure in a group and move the group instead of the character. The preset pose should apply relative to the group instead of the world, unless it's a Go-To pose designed for a specific scene.

  • Thanks for all the help, its been a while since Ive been on the forum, I kinda figured this out on my own!

I have the same problem, I load a scene and then the character but it takes forever to get the figure where I want it and the parameter dials seem a slow way to do it. There has to be something faster, can the scene be "fixed" or locked where I can then move the character using the orbit tool?

There's a script to bring a figure in front of your camera/perspective:

If you hold down alt(Win)/opt(Mac) and drag the item out of the content pane you will get a target icon on the floor - release the mouse, then the key, and the item will load treating that point as the origin.
