Can you fold a plane?

I am thinking about trying to make a backdrop prop.

To do so, I would need what is essenially a folded plane, not unlike the picture.

Is there a way to do this in D|S?

An alternate idea I have would be to set up several planes for each section, export them as an object then reimport them, which in theory would weld them together....would this be a better idea?

Everyday Morphing Primitives has a plane that you can fold in the middle. http://www.daz3d.com/everyday-morphing-primitives It's called Terrain_1. I've also seen a set here with a folding room divider in it, perhaps you could retexture it. Can't remember which set it was, though.

Thanks for the pointers...I'd be aiming this as a give away/freebie thing, so couldn't really use a product, though.

Why not create several planes and put them together such that they resemble a folded plane?

3D modeling is not scary or hard, try Wings 3D or even Google Sketchup,

there are so many free apps for simple stuff like this

  • It can be done in DS, using a DForm with a weight map so that you get a nice sharp break between bending and not bending. Give the plane primitive enough divisions to put a line of vertices where you want the bend, create a DForm and position the base on the edge you want to fold (this is the hinge) and move its field right out of the way. Now use the Geoemtry Editor tool to select all of the polygons beyond the hinge, the ones that should bend. Switch to the Node Weight paint tool and select the DForm then in the Tool Settings pane select Add map next to Influence Weights. Finally right-click and select Weight Editing>Fill Selected and set the value to 100%.

This is interesting stuff, but when I tried to follow this is what came up ( for better view I put on the wire frame of my plane). while ther is a very nice exact edge in my plane it still levels out outside. So where did I go wrong. If I wnat to fold it once in the middle would I have to select one complete half of the plane with the editor?

No, I selected those two lines in the middle, under the dformer base. But then I guess I see where I misunderstood. I will try again.

hmm.. I am wondering if my second thought of using multiplanes then exporting/importing might work better?

That way I have more presice control over the size of each bend?

I'm sure that  would work as well, but that method would not give you the option of altering the angle later on.

you need it uv mapped to show one full image?

My simple plan is getting more complicated all the time. :(

it's an interesting puzzle, it's folded over once and then fan folded.   map folded

really just the fan folding.. the peice of paper i grabbed was folded over :D

(the actual thing isn't fan folded...more a right angle U...the paper was just to get my point across :D )

oh, lol, my brain was twisting into knots thinking how to rig it

bryce could do a subtraction boolean to cut a cube with another cube to cutout the shape you want..

could create a texture add-on for the daz store's folding screens.  was a pc freebie, think a lot of us haz itsmiley

Sonuvagun! Thank you. I'd forgotten that I had it! As I've forgotten so many things. Looking through my "Purchased Items" page is like a treasure hunt sometimes.
