Dry Mud Desert

The product description for this isn't written in an unambiguous manner. Can anybody tell us--for certain--whether or not the new iray version of this product requires the previous non-iray version? Thanks!

Comments
It does require the previous version. This is just shaders and texture adaptions, and also Iray lighting for the scene. There's no new geometry.
So the combo (both products) costs over $20 with current 12% DAZ discount? Just imagine the cost witout discounts! That's outrageously expensive and substantially higher than the original stand-alone product. That's a pretty poor marketing/sales strategy, despite this being a nice product.
The combined price without discounts is 33$. I wouldn't call that "outrageously expensive". And yes, I am on a tight budget, too.
If the price is a problem, put it on your wishlist, and buy it during the PA sale, or another sale that gives you 60 or more % off.
The original product came out shortly before Iray was integrated, and it look fantastic in 3DL. It has special shaders.
What you are looking at now is a set of new textures, Iray shaders and sky/light sets. If Iray had been around at the time, you'd probably just get the Iray set at the price of the 3DL set, or probably higher.
Looks like the product has been edited. Dry Mud Desert is now listed as a required product up top.
I will say this, I LOVE the original product, use it quite often....in Iray, since I have my own workarounds. So I am on the fence with the new product, but I'll probably get it to support the vendor. I truly wish Aako would make more scenes like this becaue they are fantastic and very much needed IMO.
Yeah, I'll just have to wait until The PA Sale comes around.
I have to agree that the pricing feels high, given that this is basically a texture set with lights. However, at least selling it as an add-on is preferable to what some vendors have been doing, where they're offering the exact same geometry with Iray textures for the same or higher price than the original release.
The original is a great product, and it looks very real with just the Iray Uber Base conversion. If you owned and used the original then the price of this Add-on would not seem like much of an inconvenience. This is a really big desert. I have not seen its equal in Poserverse.
I'm wish listing it until the price is reduced some.
Right now both have a 40% discount making it $21.94 for the package. Not a bad price, considering the promo pics. I'm on a budget myself, but I must say that for the quality that these seem to have texture-wise it's quite a bargain. Also it's not a set that has basically one use and you'd never think about repurposing it for another scene.
I'm not going to gripe over the price that someone thinks their work is worth; especially if the quality is clearly evident. Either it's going to be a sell or it isn't.
I second this. I use the mountains in this scene all the time and would love more sets with realistic horizon-type hills. I snapped up the iray update in large part because it comes with four new skies.
Anything released around now is likely going to be too new to be included in the PA sale in September.
I bought the original set and it's really great, but I was disappointed with the skies having artifacts from too much compression which shows rather clearly with big renders, and that spoils the party for me. So I've been considering replacing them with some better ones. Would like to see if the new set is better in this respect.
I've been experimenting a lot with procedural stuff. One area it's great with is skies. You trade some of the quality of a formed cloud shape for the benefit of thumbing your nose at resolution.
Agreed! I would like to see one with some higher, more jagged snow capped mountains and more of them. I made my own snow versions of the ground and mountain textures and it worked fairly well in this WIP image with an HDRI
For a WIP, that already looks fantastic!
I'd like to see more snowy mountains, too, but I'd especially like to see hills that look as if they have trees on them...
I have some for Carrara, and yes, the quality of the clouds is not always the best. Maybe a hybrid would work - adding a layer of real clouds from a photo to an artficial sky of some kind.
I never would have looked at this if I hadn't seen the thread. This looks like it would be perfect as a base background for darn near anything. I have wishlisted both items as I am pretty much at my max for this week but this will be a must have as soon as I can swing it.
