Main figure HD Morphs, or, The lost man

vwranglervwrangler Posts: 4,971

Just on the odd fantasy that this might happen: is there anyone Daz related/affiliated/PA'd/whatevered who could/is allowed to shed some light on how it's decided which characters get HD morphs and when? More specifically: what's going on with Kimo?

I'm just baffled because The Guy and Kenji, two toon/anime guys who positively absolutely Do Not Need HD morphs -- enhanced realism kind of flies in the face of what they're designed to do -- get HD morphs ahead of Kimo, a realistic character who could benefit from them.

The current release pace has the HD morph following one to two weeks after the main character. Kimo was released on April 24, according to his readme. Two months and counting.

Kalea has an HD morph, so why wouldn't her release partner? He is, quite literally, the only major figure in Generation 7 that doesn't have a main HD morph. So ... what's going on? Did he get taken back into the shop for a rework once they saw what was possible with Ivan's HD morph? (Seriously, that's freakin' amazing work. But I digress.) Is he wandering in a post-apocalyptic wilderness, crying out to be found? Inquiring minds want to know!

    Allow me to respond...

First of all, for you to say that figures like The Guy and Kenji "absolutely Do Not Need HD Morphs" is just plain silly. Why shouldn't they? Look at the difference between Kenji's standard torso and back details and the HD details. Many of us, I'm sure, would rather use the HD version.

As for Kimo 7 HD... well, he does exist, he's rather exquisite.... and that's all I can say. I have no clue as to his release date; just relax and render something nice while you wait for him.

    wink

While I personally agree that HD morphs (imo) aren't needed for "toon" characters, they are probably helpful for add on characters to give a bit more realism. Many of the toon type characters have support characters that really are more reality type than toon type (like Sasori for Kenji and Snowflake for Aiko), and those probably benefit from the HD morphs.

I actually think it's interesting that the more toonish characters are finally getting some of the HD Add-on action. Even on Genesis 2 with sculpting detail, I heard that people complained that the Stylized characters still looked too doughy.

Except for the Torso promo.... for the life of me I can't see any difference between the regular and HD promos for Kenji.

I've found HD morphs are often not that noticeable. However, I've found them more useful with procedural skins, where the skin textures are more uniform.

Keep in mind HD morphs are more meant for close up work, where the fine details will show up more.

Heads up for those not using 4.9/Daz Connect. Kenji HD is encrypted. I think that's the first time I've ever seen Daz do that with HD figure morphs.frown

I rarely buy the HD morphs unless they are deeply discounted, because I feel like I'm paying for the figure twice. Personally I think the HD morph should be included in the pro bundle.

That would be nice, but based on current practice, it might mean that there would be one less item of whatever sort in the pro bundle and the price could be kicked up a bit. There wouldn't be a notable savings overall, likely.

That said, the only HD morphs for this generation I've purchased that weren't deeply discounted are Lee and Ivan. Lee was a planned purchase, more or less, and Ivan was ... irresistable, I guess. He's got incredible level of detail.

I would gladly sacrifice an outfit for a HD morph. I have so many from pro bundles that have never seen the light of a render. But I may be in the minority with that preference. It would motivate me much more towards buying the pro over the base figure or starter bundle. I agree Ivan's HD looks the best so far.

  • Kimo HD got held upa  bit, but is still there and will be releasing soon. :)

Oh. Well, I suppose I'm not actually buying anything today, then. Thanks for the heads up!

Forgot to respond to this. So, to take things in order:

    1) Yeah, you're right. The toon guys' HD morphs aren't relevant to the argument I was making, beyond the fact that, you know, they're there and Kimo isn't. But at least now we have Official Confirmation that he's on the way. Eventually. Which is good because,

    2) Chuckdozer, you are a heartless, shameless tease, you are! Heartless! And even Shameless! Why, it's almost ... almost as if you were saying ....

    Keep calm...

Well, my stiff upper lip and I, we are just not having THAT!

(I kid, I kid! But the concept was just sitting there, and I couldn't resist.)

I saw her majesty the Queen by coincidence one day rolling by in a black carriage with gold crown on it. Prince Phillip & former Italy Premier, or is it Prime Minister, Berlusconi was there too. This was I believe before Berlusconi had his DAZ 3D LAMH hair transplant. laugh

I think the HD morphs in the female characters are the reason for a bug I reported to DAZ.

Huh. For some reason, I'd have sworn that I saw one for Girl 7 and Izabella 7; I remember wondering why on earth you would do that with Girl 7. Must have been mistaken. And Aiko is just new enough to be within that sort of fluffy range ... although I'm mildly surprised that Kenji got one before she did.

All that said: http://www.daz3d.com/kimo-7-hd-add-on has arrived. Oddly enough, by all three usual download formats.

It's weird because I feel like I remember Girl 7 getting one too, but I couldn't find it anywhere in store. Izabella didn't for sure - Thorne doesn't seem to do HD morphs in general.

Kimo 7 HD looks good - and nice to see he's available for everyone.

I could have also sworn that there was an HD add-on for Girl 7; Guy 7 got one...
