How is it decided what becomes DAZ Original?
Hi Everyone,
I've been wondering about this for a while now and internet searches are not helping.
Is it simply that Daz3D buys the rights for whatever they happen to like?
For a specific example:
Why is this not DAZ Original...

...if this one is?
http://www.daz3d.com/i13-hq-bathrobe-for-the-genesis-3-female-s
Same creator, same great quality.
So far it seemed that 'sexy' content is generally avoided but the bathrobe has reveal morphs just like the nurse outfit.
Or is nurse fetish somehow more objectionable than bathroom fetish?
I own the indie license for Daz Originals so this goes beyond idle curiosity.
Is there a manual to read? Or should I simply lurk more?
I must know! Please help me understand.

Well, DAZ originals can also be sexy content: http://www.daz3d.com/battle-queen-outfit-for-genesis-3-female-s or http://www.daz3d.com/deadly-intrigue-outfit-for-genesis-3-female-s , and there are at least three nurse outfits that are DAZ originals:
so that certainly isn't a criteria for what they buy or don't buy.
So far, DAZ Originals cover almost every topic, so your guess is as good as mine at what attracts them to buy one item, and not another. Though, part of it certainly has to do with the artist's willingness to sell a particular item to DAZ3D, and once they sell it,. it belongs to DAZ3D, and the artist doesn't see another penny of the sales outside of what they sold it for to DAZ3D.
Ah, I didn't know about that last part. So perhaps they want to buy more but are sometimes refused?
Thanks for the info! That certainly explains a fair bit.
When we submit a product we have the option to offer it to Daz for a buyout or not. In this case they pay a flat fee instead of taking a percentage of its sales (if they're interested).
That's basically it. Some PA's need money upfront so they decide to sell a product to Daz, or sell it as normal but with the money coming in over a longer period of time. Some PA's are also contracted to do Daz buy-outs or Daz-O's, where Daz basically pays them a "Salary" to produce work for them. Their names are still attached to the product, but they do not get money off each sale as they have already been paid a flat rate upfront for the product. So we basically can sell a product where we get a set payment amount, or sell it normally where it might tank and never make the flat payment amount, or it might exceed the flat payment amount over a longer period of time. Basically, we have choices to what suites our financial needs. Some need money upfront, and some are willing to wait as it trickles in, if it trickles in lol. Some products just go dead after launch period, so that is a risk some people aren't willing to take, and opt for a buy-out instead.
Thanks very much for your responses!
That clears things up for me perfectly.
I wish you both all the best! :)
I am under the impression that the current system unfortunaltely uses different rules and logic systems for consumers and published artists that may have some probably unintended and unfortunate side effects.
Published Artist Perspective:
As described in the quotes:
Consumer Perspective:
Customers payed a license to use DAZ Originals for games under the game license that also covers any form of holographic or virtual reality use that is not just relying on 2d images.
http://www.daz3d.com/commercial-game-developer-license
http://www.daz3d.com/indie-game-developer-license
From the consumer perspective it would be preferable that as many products as possible are sold under the DAZ Original license.
Ease of use
Example:
- Poses: It seems unpractical that not all poses are useable under the DAZ Original license. If the customers wants to create an image for VR he should not need to worry about if the selected pose is from a DAZ Originals product or not.
- In general it takes the customer additional time to put together scenes consisting only of DAZ Originals because of the additional time needed to check the license.
DAZ Connect and the improved Smart Content System made it a bit easier to find DAZ Originals in the Smart Content tab but it is still not as simple as toggling one switch and hiding all non DAZ Originals.
Higer value because of increased usage options
Because customers actually paid for a DAZ Original license to them it matters if they can use a licensed product also for "games" or not.
Recently there have been a lot more products in the store. On increasingly frequent occasions it may happen that customers did not purchase a product because it was not sold under the DAZ Originals license. Customers very likely do not have the budget to purchase every product so therefore customers may focus on those that give them access to the most possible useage scenarios.

Why is it not possible for artists to sell their products under the DAZ Original license and keep getting paid based on continous sells?
On first glance it seems the easier choice to just ask artists to completly sell their products to DAZ3D so they can be sold under the DAZ Original license. The artists received their money and with that the responsibility for DAZ Originals remains completly with DAZ3D.
But on the other hand it seems that artists that way also have to pass on potential sells.
Example:
In theory an artists would not mind at all if his pose presets are used for "games".
But in practice the artist is really happy with the pose presets he created and would like to be paid continualy based on the actual demand.
In the end the customer did not buy the pose preset because it was not a DAZ Original and as a consequence the artist now actually got less purchases.
So is it really necessary to tie the DAZ Originals license to the requirement for artists to completly selling out the products to DAZ3D?
- customers could get a larger choice of DAZ Originals
- artists could get potentially more sales from users that allready aquired a DAZ Originals license

Update / Edit:
Maybe on second glance the current system may yield a situation that has some negative side effects for both customers and artists but probably behind the scenes the current buy out system saves some potential head aches. It would be interesting to hear more about the reasons why the current buy out system was chosen.
In any case thanks a lot to all those artists who agreed to let their products be used under the DAZ Originals license.
