Anyone tried DZFire's The Torch and Construction Kit?
in The Commons
I'm really considering this product. Has anybody tried it yet to see how fast (or slow) they render?
Thanks.

They are quite good, and surprisingly fast render. I had to turn fstop up and luminence down a bit, it's very bright by default. This is what I got running ten minutes on my weak GTX 960. Actually, I noticed I forgot to turn off other luminence in the scene before I rendered, so it's not super bright by default.
I was going to wait until down the road when it was on heftier sale, but been stressed lately and I like dzfire's stuff and decided on some retail therapy.

My favorite kind of therapy!

Good to know. Im still on a gtx 770, but from what it sounds like, they may render just as fast as any of my other light sources.
Mesh lights render quick in Iray, it's when you start adding bloom that it takes forever.
Also # of polygons of mesh lights, I think. So if you have meshlights all over the flippin place, or really high subd mesh lights... boo.
Well, see thats what I was wondering about. I remember a post not to long ago that was discussing this very topic (mesh lights). The flames look like they might be fairly complex but I dont know for certain if they are the light source. And since I would to use as many torches as possible (lots of angry peasants), im wondering if my little, old, outdated graphics card might just hate me for it.
They use cutout texture maps to simulate greater complexity. The actual objects don't look so complex... I don't know for SURE, but that was my impression.
They are not cut out texture maps. :D The model is an actual modeled flame with uv mapped textures. So, if you rotate the model the flame will look different at any direction. Also, flames can be combined into larger fires. ;)
Nine torches, 10 minutes for the render.
Thats really cool. The promos of them look fantastic.
They really fit a certain look I like, of fire (or other energy) rippling over/out of stuff; dragon nostrils, demon fists/heads/whatever, smoke stacks...
Amusingly, I will probably almost never actually use them for torches.
10 minutes is great but what kind of card are you rendering with?
Im just going to have to get them and try them out myself.
I was just thinking that they would be amazing if they could be animated.
a couple of tweaks to the shaders for it to work in Carrara
