Too Much Tab Navigation

I've been using Daz Studio for about 3 months now and have a quick question - is there a way that when I select an item in my scene it automatically selects that item in the surfaces tab? I do a lot of custom surfacing and it's begining to wear on me that you have to select the item in the scene, then navigate to the surfaces tab and select the item there, then navigate to the shaders - all before being able to change the surface or shader. Is there a way to set it up so that when you select something in your scene it selects it in surfaces tab too?

If not, is there a way to write a script so that it does that? I've never written a script before but would definitely be willing to try and learn if it meant I could cut down how may tabs I have to naviate in and out of.

Any help you guys can give me would be much appreciated! :D

Use the Surface Selection Tool (see picture)

Have the Surfaces Tab and Viewport visible.  You select the surfaces in the Surfaces Tab by clicking on the surfaces on the model  in the Viewport.

Also, you can right-click over any object and get a range of options - Choose surfaces by color, texture, etc.

Ah cool! More options! Thanks, mclean. :D There is so much to learn! I'm wondering if I'll ever learn it all! lol

I can put your mind to rest there. Nope. You never will. But you can learn a lot, however. Here's a good place to start:

I like written over videos because specific topics are easier to find. Videos can be a good source of info, though, as well.

Don't worry! It's a common feeling. Just learn it the way we all do. Step by step. I've been at this 20 years now, and I'm still learning.

Btw, I live in Italy (although I'm Scottish), and Brits often ask me how long it took me to learn Italian. My answer is usually 'I'm still learning it'. And it's true. Thirty years later, I still come across new words. Of course, what they really mean is "How long did it take you to be able to communicate without sounding like a half-wit?" So I suppose it would only have been a couple of years.

Anyway, it's the same in 3d. Once you master the basics, you're on the right path. After that, it's just a question of filling in the gaps and keeping up with the new technologies.

Thank you. Sadly, you're probably right. lol I don't think I'll ever learn it all. I'm going to try though, the more I learn the easier it gets to create the type of images I want. :)

Thanks! Yeah, I'm still learning the basics for sure. The more I learn though the easier things get, so I'm definitely going to keep studying. :)
