Smoothing and IRAY

A problem popped up and I am hoping there is an easy fix. I rely heavily on the smoothing modifier and collision. In the past week what is shown with smoothing/collision in the peview window isn't rendering in the final IRAY image. It's as if all of the smoothing/collision parameters are absent with the final render. Anyone heard of this and if so is there a fix? BTW I am still using 4.8

4.8 could, as I recall, have issues like this - though I thought only if the calculations for smoothing were incomplete. In any event this was addressed in one of the 4.9 builds if I am remembering correctly.

Try turning on Interactive Update on the smoothing modifier, if it isn't on already. That has resolved issues like that in the past for me.
Thanks, but it didn't help. I am used to what I see in the viewport preview window matching what IRAY renders and as of a week ago that hasn't been the case, almost like the smoothing/collision is turned off when it isn't.
What SubD is the character at? I've seen where there is no pokethrough in the viewport but with SubD 2 or higher there is pokethrough in the actual render.
If the cloth you're using has a displacement map then make sure the minimum displacement is set to 0 and not -0.10 or something
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, unfortunately I have thought of all of them ahead of the posting. I think I'll try reinstalling DS and see if that fixes it. If not, guess I need to jump on the 4.9 bandwagon.
