Perfect, smooth cylinders in Daz Studio

Hi.

I've just spent my whole evening working on a model, only to find that I can't import it into Daz Studio :(

So, now (or tomorrow), I'm going to try and recreate it using the Primitives in Daz3D (which I didn't know was possible).

However, I have no idea what number to input to get a perfect, smooth (round) cylinder, or if it's possible to get a perfect cylinder in Daz.

I'm a tad burned out, so I'm sorry if that made very little or no sense...

    You can always convert the cylinder to SubD, then (if desired) select tehe dges round the top and bottom with the Geometry Editor tool and apply weighting to sharpen them up.

    What was the issue with importing your model?

    Why can't you import it?

    you can create a cylinder (create > new primitive > cylinder) with quite a few options in DS

    ..,which modeller were you using? 

    If it is a static prop (no rigging) you should be able to save it as a .obj and import into Daz.  If you are using Hexagon you can just send it to Daz through the Hexagon -> Daz bridge (not sure if this works with 4.9 though as I am still on 4.8).

    As to creating a smooth cylinder primitive in Daz, I would suggest setting it to 48 segments, that usually works for me for things like pipes, poles, florescent light bulbs etc.

    I've tried it again and,I have got it in through Collada.dae, but the model is so big, Daz Studio can't scale it down.

    The plan was to get the model to Daz Studio, add shaders to it (if all of the materials were seperate), and then render in Iray.

    So my only (new) back up plan is to create the model in Daz.

    How smooth does the cylinder really need to be? Here's a quick render of three primitives. From left to right, 12, 24, 48 faces. No SubD.

    What scale were you worjking in in your modeller, and which modeller was it? OBJ doesn't have a built-in scale, which is why DS has presets for different modellers, but as far as I know Collada doesn't need that.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

    I was (trying) to use Blender. I know enough about creating shapes, it's just everything else that I have a problem with.

    I just wish I knew it was possible to create primitives in Daz earlier. I could've saved myself from a very bad headache, and had the model completed weeks ago.

    So, I've now finished what I was trying to create, and I also found a tutorial on sharecg to help. 

    A couple of the Pillars need moving again and, I need to find some "apt" shaders for them (especially for Iray).

    you will have far greater creative control over your shapes in a modeler then you will with primitives in DS.

     

    Having converted blend files for use in Ds in the past, I found the best export option was to use FBX instead of OBJ

    I've just tried to import a basic cylinder into Daz from Blender using the FBX format. 

    I got an error saying: 

    Errors:

    Transform differences: Non uniform scale detected.  Results will likely be different.

    The imported cylinder was very small... 

    I'd like to create more scenes in the future, but... I don't really know where to go from here. I think I'll just stick with the Pillar scene for now.

    The Blend Import/Export scales in Studio have never been right.  A 1 meter cube in Blender will be a 1 centimeter cube in Studio when import at 100% scale, so the proper import scale should be 10,000%.
