You can't. The 4.8 is no longer distributed, unless you have backuped it somewhere.
Your only other option would be to contact customer support and check back with them if they are willing to provide you with the 4.8 version.
That said, 4.9 works fine without using DAZ Connect. I'm installing through DIM only, and it hasn't given me any troubles in that regards so far. The only thing you have to do (after waiting for the CMS conversion to complete, and I would suggest making a backup of your database if you have any self-made categories) is to tell it that you don't want to use connect, and check the "Don't ask me again" box.
EDIT: And no, DAZ 4.9 (or Connect, for the matter) will not encrypt any of your content.
The problem I seem to be running into with 4.9 is after loading something like Genesis Starter Essentials, I launch DS, login to Connect, and see DS loading metadata. After it is done, I open the GSE product in Smart Content and none of the files have thumbnails. If I'm correct, with 4.8, the thumbnails were in the meatdata with the files. Also, I loaded Genesis 2 and 3, male and female, Starter Essentials and only the female products were showing in Smart Content. This is what I have run into so far since trying to reinstall DS.
That's probably a problem with the sort of view you have selected in Smart content. I'm not using smart content, but you can check if the icons are installed if you check the Starter Essentials in the Content Directory. The Metadata doesn't hinstall the icons, they are separate image files.
Is the problem with items which were installed using DIM or manually, or with items installed using Connect?
When I started this thread, I was loading everything from DIM. Luckily, I had DS 4.8 installed on my laptop and was able to do a manual install of DS 4.8 on my desktop. I have been reloading the rest of my files with DIM. Since I'm basically reloading the files from the previous install (the drive was not wiped, just needed to reinstall since I had to do a clean install of Windows on my main drive). Now the issue I'm running into, is none of the thumbnails are showing up for the products in Smart Content. If I click into any of them, I do see thumbnails for all the files. Is there an easy way to fix the thumbnails in the product listing of Smart Content, or does it have to be done individually? Here are some screen shots.
Figured it out. Went to Content Library tab, clicked the drop down at the top of the tabs and selected Content Directory Manager. Changed to paths for DAZ Studio and Poser formats to where the content is on the drive. Was doing this for Content Library, but the bonus was my Smart Content thumbnails filled in.
That was going to be my suggestion, but I see you beat me to it!
I maintain an image of my content libraries on a separate, external USB drive, so I can take it with me when I'm toting around one of my other computers (that do not have content installed on the local disk). I keep it synced with my "master" content libraries using a Microsoft product called SyncToy. (It's free, and I heartily recommend it.)
The downside of this is that every time I re-sync the two drives, the content database on the machine I connect the external device to is "out of sync" -- that is, the instance of DAZ Studio, and its local CMS, that is installed on the machine doesn't know that additional content has been installed. So, before I can use any of it, I have to run the 'Re-import metadata' option from the 'Content DB Maintenance' function. (And if the drive letter has changed, I have to re-map the content directories in DS; that doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.)
If you don't use Smart Content, then this probably won't be a big issue for you. I do use it, so it's just one more maintenance chore I have to stay on top of....
