Car Ranger IRay not working

marblemarble Posts: 7,500

I bought the Iray update for the Car Ranger product but I can't apply the new IRay materials. When I look in the surfaces tab it remains at DAZ Studio default shaders.

Anyone else have this to test, please?

Correction - a few of the surfaces are converted but the rest stay at DAZ Studio Default.

Tried applying the Daz Uber shader first? Sometimes that's what I need to do before Iray mats apply.

On further inspection, I believe that the IRay upgrade is only partial for this product. Several of the surfaces are changed to IRay materials while other are not. So I went through and changed the glass to IRay glass and the chrome to IRay polished Aluminium. etc. The body paint is updated by the new shaders, however.

EDIT - Jack, I just tried that and I honestly don't know whether the IRay materials are Uber or Custom Iray now :)

I'll ping the artist and see if it's intended or not.

Which presets are you applying? Originally the metadata was incorrect and a lot of the files were in Lost and Found - if you are using the DIM Install they may still be there (Connect users, who have allowed DS to go online in the last half day or so, should have updated metadata with the correct locations).

There is a folder called IRay under Vehicles>Car Ranger>Mats. There are presets for differnt colours plus some for wheels, etc.

I am using DIM - I don't use Connect (probably never will).

In the Content Library pane or in Smart Content/Categories? I guess the former, in which case the Lost-and-Found issue doesn't affect you.

Content Library pane - I never use Smart Content either. I used to have custom categories but they were trashed when I updated to 4.9.

Can you try this and let me know if it works. Restart Studio, just for good measure. Navigate to most likely unless you have relocated it... in Content Library... Vehicles->Car Ranger and load the prop. Then with the prop selected in the scene tab... back in Content Library expand Materials under Car Ranger, then select the Iray folder and then apply the first material on the list, "All Black on Black".

I'm sorry if this seems elementary to you... I'm just trying to start with a set of steps known to work, at least on my install, to try to get to the bottom of this. :)

When I do this every surface is converted to Iray and all have proper Iray textures applied. So, when I then check the Surfaces tab and click each surface individually, I do see all of them are using Iray's PBR Metallicity/Roughness Base Mixing.

I too saw there was an update on this after release. Not sure what was done. If you are not seeing this, perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling the product might repair the install.

If this works, but there is another material that does not work, please let me know.

Here's a bit more about how these textures work. The ones that start with "All", will apply Iray textures to the entire vehicle. The rest are smart materials and only effect individual parts and will not set the rest of the Ranger to Iray textures. So, for instance, 'Body Red Wine' will only change the body color (Hull under the surface tab) and at the same time convert that to an Iray surface. It will have no effect on any other parts/surfaces of the Ranger, so they will still be 3DL textures.

You should not need to do any conversion to Iray before beginning. It's automatic. HTH!

Oh dear. I feel embarrassed now.

What I had done initially was to scroll down the thumbnails of car colours until I reached red and then double-clicked that. When I noticed that some of the surfaces were not Iray, I tried another - Black Special Ops. Of course, both of those are body colours and not prefixed by "All".

As you say, the "All" selections do apply Iray throughout. My apologies.

"All" good. LOL!!! Yeah, the idea is for you to be able to fully customize the Ranger to any of the color combos, so yes, that is the expected behaviour. Generally speaking, although I'm sure there are exceptions... applying one of the 'All' textures first should give the best results. But hey... I never want to force anyone into a box. :)

Great! Seems we have it figured out.

The update was because the metadata did not work at all. None of the materials showed up properly. The update fixed the metadata problem.

May I just add that the car looks fantastic! Rendered with Iray, even with all those reflections and all that glass, it takes about 10 minutes on my GTX970.

Thanks! And that the kind of success I like to hear. Have fun!
