Getting an outline render using 3dlight script

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out (again) how to get a png render with nothing but outlines out of DAZ studio... I asked before, tried to find the old post, but since the forums got updated, I guess that post was long lost...

Thanks a lot,

Me

My one complaint is that it can make stuff seen edge on filled in black.

Also I'll point out that the DZ Toon shader (which I believe is part of the basic install) also outlines things. It might be easier to simply use that and, if you don't want the filled parts, erase it in post.

Yet I remember there was a way using scripted 3D Delight to get only the outline and nothing else...

    How was that done again?

I think you are right, but I can't remember how it went. Frankly, the geo shell thing is easier, I think.

Here are two examples. The first uses the geoshell shader, the second uses cartoon shader, both with some tweaking of levels.

    Wasp Geo.jpg
    2000 x 2000 - 2M
    Wasp Gray.jpg
    2000 x 2000 - 321K
  • The thing is, I want that outline png as a layer to put on top of another render of the same pic...

Photoshop or Paint.net or whatever should do that fine. Put it as a layer and set it to Multiply... I do that a lot with the more illustrated look I'm going for nowadays.

    And here's an example again:

    Wasp Draw.jpg
    2000 x 2000 - 816K
  • But how do I get the outline pic to render the outline only? And no surfaces? The scripted render did that for me does this geometry shell thing do that to?

Thanks a lot for the help

To get just outlines, like my first image, I used the Geo Shell shader and made the underlying surface a simple surface with 100% ambient light (IE: the underlying figure renders as flat white).

  • Hi,

sorry for the delay in reply... The shader is no longer available... The dropbox link does not work...

Could you expand this description a bit (maybe with screen shots?) It sounds very interesting...

Ah.. so this is where the mysterious file I just found on my commputer is from....and I see m question was not answered :(

Oh, sorry, lost track of the thread last year. ;)

Basically make all surfaces ambient white 100%. This means everything looks white and the only thing that's going to appear is the geoshell outline thing. However, having experimented a lot since then, I think a much easier approach is simply to add an Ambient light, turn off ambient occlusion, and just amp it up until everything is white. I don't even think you need to do anything to the surfaces, they'll all flood white. I think.
