OT: Voltron!

I just binge watch Voltron ... I am a bit conflicted, over all I love it-but there are issues.
First, Coran .... they destroyed a rock to make comedy. They could have used him as the straight man with the team being the goof balls.
The transformation song sucks big time and the limbs don't roar after Voltron is formed. Keith (my childhood crush) did not make sense to me. Why would the best pilot washout? How does he know Shiro? The beginning was so rushed it was hard to dig into the characters. I have to keep reminding myself that it was a cartoon designed for 8 to 12 years old, it needs time to mature.
Even through there are craveats I am hooked. I NEED second season.
Things that I love, the castle is a spaceship - Awesome.
Space mice .... check.
Fun ... check
Lance ... Sorkka, Is that you?
Shiro ... Dreamy soldier with PSTD
Keith ... Still crushing....
Pidge .... cute
Lance ... hugable
Princess ... okay .... shape changer and super strength? .... meh, sorry not on my awesome list.
I'm going to waste my day off and watch it again!

Comments
Mentioned immediately after the simulator bit - he had discipline problems.
And this was EXACTLY what I was hoping it would be. And yes, Lance looks like Sokka. But at least it was written with respect to the original source material.
Wait! They remade Voltron? I only see one episode released so far. Why are you asking for a second season already when the second show hasn't even aired yet? Anyways, Voltron is really back? Looks like they went with the lions. Smart move.
Netflix has the whole 11 episode season, I just finished watching it myself. I liked it, of course this is my first and only experience with Voltron, so there was no nostalgia baggage on my shoulders. Can't wait for the second season (and the way the season ended, I really hope there is a second season coming).
Love love love Voltron. I got the notification from Netflix this morning. Is that the Voltron reboot?
Its a remake from the 80's series commissioned by Netflix and its done by the same company that did the Avatar cartoons. I've been waiting for this for months! Told my kids the TV was mine as soon as I got home from work. I loved the nods to the old series and the easter eggs are great. Netflix does not torture us with a weekly release. I hope they jazz up the music for second season. it was so underwelming and kind of muted the fight scenes quite a bit. This is a remake done well, not great but definite room for improvements and growth.
so they changed Sven's name to Shiro. I wonder why the change. I always did like Sven, but they replaced him with the Prin-cess.
And I don't like the fact that they downgraded Keith's ranking to number 2. He was the leader in the 80s version and should keep that rank. It's certainly lacking the theme music. I hope they bring it back. That music has always been a part of the Voltron formation. It just doesn't feel the same without it when they form Voltron.
I remember back in the 80s when I would come home from school and watch my afternoon cartoons. Voltron, He-Man, Thundercats and even Ghostbusters.
hardest part of binge watching is r/l when it's over.
According to the showrunner in a Nerdist interview, they wanted to "increase diversity" by adding a second Japanese dude and getting rid of "the guy with a weird accent"... A misguided quote that came to memory and made me eyeroll extra hard when they gender-bended Pidge.
Well Shiro is also a nod to Takashi Shirogane, Sven's name in Golion.Noticed a lot of nods to Golion in this version of Voltron. (Galra, Altea, Shiro, etc)
Sad fact is I saw the Pidge issue coming a thousand miles away (here's my eyeroll). Did you guys see the nod to Macross/Robotech?
I noticed Focker in the background.
One thing that I do love about the Netflix reboot is that Voltron does not overly rely on the blazing sword and the fact that the fight scenes with the Robeasts are more intense. In the past, once the blazing sword was formed you can pretty much tell the fight is about to end. I would be happy if they would just bring back the theme song. One more thing that I like and noticed is the worn out look of the lions. The metals are scratched and paint chipped off. I am a bit confused though with why they made the lions more "conscious" like robots, like they are not just vehicles to be driven by the paladins...that these robots have a mind of their own...that's a bit of a stretch for me.
I can't believe it was only 11 episodes. Hopefully the next batch will be half a year instead of a full year :/
Except, in the original show, the lions had a bit of an AI to them. So the lions NOT being somewhat self aware would be a stretch for ME.
Never noticed that back then.
Just watched the first episode, and MAN this thing moves! It's a lot of fun, basically the first episode is an origin story and we're off and running. Can't wait to see where this goes, but it seems to be confidently on track.
It was little things, like the lions stretching and roaring when waking up, and in at least GoLion, it was mentioned that the lions helped the Voltron Force learn how to pilot them.
No interest in the reboot cartoon, but a couple comments mentioned the lions having AI. It's explicitly stated in Golion that Voltron(Golion) was originally one single, pilotless sentient robot. He originally couldn't separate, and he was basically an intergalactic policeman ala Ultraman. But he started believing that he was judge, jury and executioner and started attacking and destroying innocent races simply cos he could. Then A Goddess appeared, and punished him for his crimes by splitting him into the lions, and destroying his higher "brain" functions. This was turned in the US version into Haggar disguising herself as a goddess, and doing that to him. My question with the US version of that being, why the heck couldn't she simply do that again to him? But that's one of many issues with the somewhat misguided rewriting that took place. That said, the original Voltron still is one of my all time fave cartoons.
